Although she flows smoothly over mellow vibes on her most known single, the Kendrick Lamar collaboration “Flower Child,” don’t be fooled. This beauty is a beast when it comes to bars on beats. Her latest album The Art of Chill puts her buoyant but boisterous lyricism on full display. Toronto-based artists are also well-represented as part of The Academy’s International Women’s Day showcase, with performers Tanika Charles and Lal taking The Mod Club stage. Tanika Charles, affectionately known as Mz. Chawls, has been making waves on Toronto’s airwaves, her latest single “Soul Run” charting on CBC Radio 2’s Top 20 since its release last November. Artists and activists by the same drum, LAL have been making their mark and voices heard in Toronto’s music scene over the past two decades. Preaching equality in solidarity with women’s rights, Indigenous peoples’ rights, and racialized people around the world, singer Rosina Kazi blatantly and purposefully implements anti-colonial messaging to producer Nicolas Murr’s dance-inducing house beats.A portion of the proceeds generated from ticket sales will be donated to the It Starts With Us initiative, supporting and honouring the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit people and their families. The Mod Club is located at 722 College St., at the intersection of College St. and Crawford St. Doors open at 8pm, and the show begins at 9pm. Tickets are $25 in advance and can be purchased at Soundscapes (572 College St.) or online at http://universe.com/IWDTO.
