Sympathy For The Devil: The True Story of The Process Church of the Final Judgment
Q&A with Director Neil Edwards + Process Church member Brother Luke!
In the late sixties and early seventies, a mysterious black-cloaked tribe wandered the streets of Toronto and several other North American cities, provoking and terrifying passers-by with their doomsday predictions and strange proclamations of a unity between Christ and Satan.
When the weird group was awarded funding from the Canadian government, Toronto’s newspapers were outraged by the ‘GRANTS FOR SATANISTS!’
Today, if you Google ‘The Process Church of the Final Judgment’ you will discover a long list of lurid conspiracy theories. The cult was formed on the other side of the Atlantic, in early 1960s London, and recruited the children of wealthy families and the aristocracy. It has been accused of being the inspiration for Charles Manson's 'crimes of the century', influencing the assassination of Bobby Kennedy, and being the root of the notorious Son of Sam serial killings that terrorised New York.
Ever since Britain's newspapers branded them the 'MINDBENDERS IN MAYFAIR' and 'THE DEVIL'S DISCIPLES', the group adopted a secretive stance with the media.
Only now, decades later, have former members agreed to reveal the truth behind the conspiracy theories, and open up about their beliefs, rituals, sexual practices, and the closely guarded secret of the real power behind their supposed Messiah, Robert de Grimston.
The film gets behind the veils of the cult with three gods - Jehovah, Lucifer, and Satan, and their journey from their formation in England’s swanky Mayfair district, through extreme wilderness experiences in Mexico, flirtations with pop royalty, and their spread through Canada and the USA that resulted in them being ‘christened’ ‘One of the most dangerous satanic cults in America’.
Featuring contributions from several leading former members and insights from filmmaker John Waters (who encountered the cult in New Orleans) musical legend George Clinton (who included Process writings on two of his seminal Funkadelic albums), artist and innovator Genesis P. Orridge, and renowned authors Gary Valentine Lachman, Robert Irwin, and Gaia Servadio (who infiltrated the group in 1966).
