The Department for International Trade in association with AIM, BPI and the MPA present a webinar giving you an insight into the Chinese Music Industry.
According to the IFPI (Global Music Report 2021) China was the second fastest growing of the top 20 global markets in 2020 and maintained its position as the seventh largest recorded music market in the world.
Revenues were up 33.6% year-on-year thanks to strong streaming revenues of US$718.1 million, which represented a 90.7% revenue share and a growth rate of 34.0%. Following growth of 55.8% in 2020, subscription streaming overtook ad-supported audio streaming as the biggest contributor to revenues. China was the world’s second largest market by users of subscription streaming accounts and had the highest growth in users of the top five markets in the world.
Elsewhere in digital, China was the only top 20 market to post growth for downloads and other digital revenue, with income of US$44.3 million that increased by 66.8% in 2020.
Physical revenues grew 75.9% driven by a strong increase in CD sales but only represented 0.6% of total revenues.
In China, short form video was a significant part of engagement with music, with over half of people’s time on apps such as Douyin spent watching music-dependant videos.
