Rusty, the store’s owner, is a neighborhood fixture. His daily joy is helping customers browse his endless bins of soul, funk, disco and jazz.LAZARUS captures a moment in the life of a neighborhood teen on a mission to find a present for his grandmother. The kid is both drawn to and baffled by this den of old school sound, with its hand-drawn signs and its 1970s-styled owner Rusty who sits out on the sidewalk greeting passers-by with a smile and a nod. Rusty leads Lazarus through the trap doors, down the stairs, and behind the beaded curtain. The store, the music and the great Rusty himself cast a spell of warmth and goodwill over all who enter to which Lazarus succumbs in spite of himself. He starts to shed his cool teen armor as the two fall into easy banter about music, names and romance. With someone as kind as Rusty watching over you, it’s hard to do wrong. To enter, you go down -- through a pair of metal trap doors, down some stairs, through a beaded curtain -- to this vault of vinyl under the sidewalk.Like so many city gems, his shop will shutter one day. Before that day we felt we had to go in and point a camera at some fierce talent to tell a story and pay our respects to this neighborhood oasis. Thus the film LAZARUS was born.
