Black Girls Book Club presents: The Salon - A Black Girls Book Club Production
2019 has been an incredible year for Black women and to celebrate that fact we thought we host a cute Friday night soirée at The Curtain Private Members Club.
As well as being a celebration it’s also a welcome party for Carmyn Garrett, author of the brilliant YA debut ‘Full Disclosure.
At 13, Carmyn was a reporter for TIME for Kids - a supplement of TIME magazine – and has since written for MTV and the Huffington Post. She covered topics such as the rise of online ‘Haters’ culture, the importance of Beyoncé to young black woman, and the rejuvenation of feminism in Gen Z. You can find a full list of her articleshere.
She sold her debut novel FULL DISCLOSURE at 17 – described by Hate U Give author Angie Thomas as ‘unflinchingly honest, eye-opening, heartful story that's sure to keep readers talking’ and has recently featured in both Teen Vogue’s 21 Under 21 and Glamour’s College Women Of The Year 2019.
FULL DISCLOSURE is an honest, affecting, sex-positive, laugh-out-loud-funny young adult novel starring Simone Garcia-Hampton, a black teen born HIV-positive. Raised by loving queer parents who assure her that she is not defined by her diagnosis, Simone navigates a whole new world of fear, disclosure and radical self-acceptance when she falls in love – and lust – for the first time. Simone’s journey to share her secret while still protecting her heart is a thoughtful, compelling heart-warming look at the particular challenges of adolescence, written as only a teen could.
We are using this event to celebrate Carmyn’s achievements. Revel in Black excellence and to turn all the way up as we reach the halfway point of our literary festival
Black Girls Book Club are committed to ensuring that Black women in the UK and beyond are consistently given the opportunity to come together in luxury settings surrounded by dope women, good food and serious vibes
