Join us in conversation to explore Illuminating Care: The Pedagogy and Practice of Care in Early Childhood Communities by Carol Gardbodden Murrary.
In this Lunch and Learn opportunity, we will dig deeper into the Second Lamp of Care: Care is a Right. The chapter includes conversations about pedagogical approaches to care in regard to respect for children, transformational partnerships with families, power in partnerships, and high-quality care. Murray discusses the way that rules and regulations have impacted childcare and early years settings to a compliance model, rather than a care one. Additionally, searching for meaning within dependency and reframing its need for interconnectedness. Children have the right to responsive adults who see their relationships as foundational to building human beings at whatever stage in life they’re at; examples of slowing down to encourage helping skills in toddlers, individualize programming needs to meet the children they’re created for.
Thinking with Murray’s research and perspective: How do we prioritize care as a right? Not only for the children we work with but for ourselves so that we can be present in giving care? How can we advocate for care as a right within a compliance-based practice?
