Description
In conjunction with the Americana Music Foundation, the GRAMMY Museum is thrilled to present an intimate conversation and performance with Margo Price at The Greene Space at WNYC and WQXR in New York City. The conversation will be moderated by Craig Finn of The Hold Steady and will include a discussion about the making of Margo's latest projects, creative process, career, and more. Following the conversation, there will be a performance by Margo.
Margo Price is one of many artists to be featured in the GRAMMY Museum’s New York City program series, which includes bringing a slate of the GRAMMY Museum’s renowned GRAMMY In The Schools Education Programs and Public Programs to the East Coast in partnership with the City of New York Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment. “A New York Evening With…” is generously supported by the Dawn and Brian Hoesterey Family Foundation.
ABOUT MARGO PRICE:
Margo Price has something to say but nothing to prove. In just three remarkable solo albums, the singer and songwriter has cemented herself as a force in American music and a generational talent. A deserving critical darling, she has never shied away from the sounds that move her, the pain that’s shaped her, or the topics that tick her off, like music industry double standards, the gender wage gap, or the plight of the American farmer (in 2021, she even joined the board of Farm Aid).
While the last few years have seen remarkable moments of acclaim – a Best New Artist GRAMMY nomination, Americana Music Honors, a Saturday Night Live performance, and just about every outlet and critics’ year-end Best Of list – Price is still hungry. On her fourth full-length Strays, a clear-eyed mission statement delivered in blistering rock and roll, she’s taking on substance abuse, self-image, abortion rights, and orgasms. Musically extravagant but lyrically laser focused, the 10-song record tears into a broken world desperate for remedy. And who better to tell it? Price has been to the mountain and back, but finds herself, at long last, free. Feral. Stray.
Moving from the sparse folk of her 2016 debut, Midwest Farmer’s Daughter, into the rollicking roots of All American Made the following year, and into classic rock with 2020’s That’s How Rumors Get Started, Margo Price has established herself as a sonic explorer of the finest ilk. Louder, lusher and more layered, Strays dives deeper into rock and roll, psychedelic country, rhythm & blues, and even bright shiny pop, traversing new sounds and influences more confidently than ever before.
Produced by Jonathan Wilson (Angel Olsen, Dawes, Father John Misty), with special appearances from Lucius, Mike Campbell and Sharon Van Etten, Margo Price and her longtime band recorded Strays during a blissful week in California’s Topanga Canyon. “It was the best studio experience I'd ever had in my life,” she says. “I feel more mature in the way that I write now. I’m on more than just a search for large crowds and accolades. I’m trying to find what my soul needs.”
ABOUT CRAIG FINN:
Craig Finn is a Minnesota-bred singer/songwriter based in New York City, best known as the singer of The Hold Steady. Finn spent the ’90's leading Minneapolis indie band Lifter Puller, which released 3 albums and an EP. After relocating to New York, he joined with Lifter Puller member Tad Kubler to form The Hold Steady in 2003. The Hold Steady quickly achieved critical acclaim and a worldwide fanbase with their unique pairing of dense lyrical narratives with big rock guitars. The Hold Steady has released nine LPs, including The Price of Progress in March 2023. Finn put out his first solo album in 2012 with four additional solo LPs to follow, most recently A Legacy of Rentals in 2022. Also in 2022, Finn launched his podcast “That’s How I Remember It,” which features him exploring the link between memory and creativity with a variety of artists. Guests have included Fred Armisen, George Saunders, Amanda Shires, Bill Hader and more. Pitchfork has described Finn as “a born storyteller, who has chosen rock as his medium.”
