“Hitchcock meets Jerry Lewis.” That’s how Jim Carrey pitched audiences his newest big-screen comedy in 1996. THE CABLE GUY seemingly blind-sided moviegoers and critics who, presumably, weren’t ready to see Ace Ventura go full Hand That Rocks the Cradle-- but how does it fare today?
Directed by a post-REALITY BITES, pre-plethora of goddamn museum movies, Ben Stiller and produced and ghost-written by a young Judd Apatow, THE CABLE GUY tells the story of Steven (Matthew Broderick) and the titular repairman (Carrey) who just wants to be his friend-- no matter what.
While parts of the movie are obviously dated (who has cable TV anymore?) its themes of media obsession and technological isolation are arguably more relevant than ever. And even 20 years later, awkward conversations with Medieval Times servers are still a thing.
Hosted by Rewatchability, a podcast dedicated to re-visiting the movies of our past to see how they hold up today. The Rewatchability gang and a special guest will introduce the screening, give away prizes, and possibly insist on being your new best friend.
