One of the most striking aspects of the international reaction to COVID-19 is the lack of leadership among the G-20 countries to pull the world together in common cause. We've seen nothing like the tightly focused and concerted global effort to respond to the Great Recession in autumn 2008. During the past tumultuous weeks, European Union governments have rushed to close their borders to each other. President Xi of China has continued his veil of secrecy about the true nature of the crisis within the country's borders. President Trump appears to have made few efforts to reach out to other nations to figure out a way to slow the virus and to take measures to limit economic damage. Now, ambassadors and former European leaders have urged the US to ease their sanctions on Iran. But what else can and should the G-20 countries do to band more closely together? What can we do to foster a more cooperative and effective global response to this pandemic?
