The first in a series of inspirational 'Spero Meliora Lectures' raising money for Hyndland Secondary School, will see athlete, broadcaster and ambassador, Mr Mark Beaumont, share stories from his outstanding career and most recent 80 Days adventure, which saw him set two World Records while circumnavigating the globe on a bike in 78 days, 14 hours and 40 minutes.
At the age of 12 Mark cycled across Scotland and by the time he was 15 he had pedalled his way from John O’Groats to Land’s End.
His first major expedition was a decade ago and it was the same circumnavigation World Record. Back then Mark cycled unsupported and took 82 days off the previous best time, in a journey that was captured for the BBC and in the book ‘The Man who Cycled the World.’
Since then the cyclist, adventurer and broadcaster has continued to make history, including:
2010 cycled & climbed the Americas from Alaska, to Tierra del Fuego for a BBC Television series.
2011 joined a six-man team to row the Arctic to the 1996 location of the North Magnetic Pole for BBC One.
2012 part of a team attempting to break the mid Atlantic rowing World Record and survived capsize
2013 lead the BBC coverage ahead of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games
2015 Set new World Record for fastest sole ride for the length of Africa in 42 days and 8 hours
Now married and a father to two young children, Marks latest adventure pushed him further physically and mentally than ever before – and re-defined the limits of what is humanly possible.
