Description
What is the Ann Arbor Blues Festival?
The Ann Arbor Blues Festival is widely-regarded as the first electric blues festival in North America and featured perhaps the greatest lineup of blues musicians ever assembled – including B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Freddie King, Big Mama Thornton, Luther Allison and so many more. Expanded in 1972 and renamed the Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival, it quickly became one of the world’s premier music festivals, playing host to superstars like Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Dr. John, Koko Taylor, Etta James and countless others.
Though the last Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival was held in 2006, a group of community members revived the Ann Arbor Blues Festival in 2017 under its original name in anticipation of 2019’s 50th anniversary.
The 2018 Ann Arbor Blues Festival
Unlike other famous festivals, where people go to make the scene, the Ann Arbor Blues Festival has always been about the music. That same ethos permeates the current edition of the festival. The artists performing in 2018 have received innumerable honors throughout their careers, including boast more than 20 Grammy nominations, have won dozens of Blues Music Awards, and have garnered hundreds of other prestigious industry and listener accolades.
In addition to attracting the best talent in the blues world, one the goals for the Ann Arbor Blues Festival is to honor its Chicago-style blues roots while looking towards the future of the genre. To that end, this year’s festival features a diverse mix of blues musicians, including contemporary blues artists, bands that performed at the original festivals, and up-and-coming blues musicians like 17-year old guitar prodigy Jake Kershaw.
