Description
ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
Embark on a visionary art journey with the fine artist Daniel Mirante, whose exploration of shamanistic and transpersonal states of consciousness has deeply influenced his art practice. As a teacher and student of the old masters’ methods and materials of painting, Mirante has been driven to express the metaphysical in his work as part of a revival of shamanistic practice through the creative arts.
A founding faculty member of the Vienna Academy of Visionary Art and past assistant to Ernst Fuchs, Daniel Mirante has over 10 years in sacred and fine art education and has instructed nearly 1000 artists who have gone on to practice professionally as painters and instructors themselves.
Explore the traditional natural mediums of oil, tempera grassa and natural pigments in this painting workshop. Gain deeper insight into the threads that connect contemporary visionary art to ancient sacred art, via a line of knowledge transmission of the craft of paint mediums and methods. Understand how to work with oils using the most natural materials and organic recipes, and develop an intimate relationship with your mediums of expression as well as the mysterious wellsprings of spirit that compels visionary art.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Over the course of a week in an atmosphere of fun and friendliness, we will explore numerous techniques in ink, oil and egg tempera drawn from the symbolists, surrealists, Renaissance, and contemporary visionary art movement. The aim is to furnish the participant with a deeply empowering understanding of the craft of painting - involving:
Materials and behaviors and compatibilities of various formulations of natural, earth-based mediums and pigments
Stratigraphy (layers) and phase space (choices) of the stages of constructing a painting
Enjoying an atmosphere focused on the visual language of symbolism and mystery
Daniel refers to this ‘deep time’ approach as 'Archeofuturism' - Renaissance traditionalism combined with contemporary approaches.
We will engage in guided creative practices leading up to a personal artwork in old masters techniques with natural pigments. Stories and readings from ancient philosophies and mystery cults will guide and embellish our exploration of visual symbolic languages.
Immersive Storytelling and Worldbuilding:
Daniel is a storyteller and emphasizes the role of myth-making as a method to develop an anagogic or numinous experience of the world. He will explain his own process in detail to world-building, imaginal landscapes and allegory.
Our class time will be a balance of ‘techne’ and ‘psyche’ - the outer and inner means, the two wings on which we fly.
Learn fundamental principles of painting in oil and tempera grassa following the methods of Leonardo, Gustave Moreau, Ernst Fuchs and other past luminaries
Learn to make the recipes of custom paint and mediums based on traditional renaissance principles and natural ingredients
Create an underpainting via the delicate method of optical grisaille – sculpting with light
Glaze transparent colors in oil
Bringing forth a world of imagination via narrative, world-building and symbolic languages
Traditional principles of harmonic composition
Scale and depth considerations
Decalcomania and other techniques of abstract textures
Balance between control and spontaneity, meditation and energetic expression

TESTIMONIALS
From the first day Daniel was professional, friendly, warm and welcoming. Daniel knows what it means to lead by example which is part of what I believe makes him such an excellent teacher and human being. Daniel truly embodies what it means to live an authentic and creative life. This is clearly reflected in his gentle, loving, funny and kind demeanor. In addition to being an all around great guy, Daniel is an incredibly talented artist. An artist who possesses a vast knowledge and understanding of his craft. Daniel has a tremendous amount of patience and love for each of his students. I always felt Daniel shared his wisdom freely without holding back or keeping painting secrets just for himself. I felt that Daniel honestly wants each of his students to become the best artist they are capable of becoming. Daniel is an extremely hard worker, to say the least. Daniel worked longer days then he should have, everyday. Daniel was the life force that carried our class through this intensive process. Incredibly, each student left the course with an absolutely incredible and meaningful piece of art. I can say with full confidence you will leave Daniels workshop a better artist and likely a better human being. Bon’ Voyage! — Naomi
I had the honor of attending the retreat with Daniel Mirante, it was an incredible artistic, relational and spiritual experience. I experienced a profound immersion in the traditional principles of the knowledge that comes to us from our predecessors, an alchemical journey from tradition to the new vision, the visionary one. Daniel has been able to guide me with a lot of respect and delicacy in my artistic exploration. What I appreciated most about his guide was the love, passion and humility he puts into artistic practice, into his work. thanks to the sharing of his artistic career, his history and his being, he helped me to better understand how to be a conscious artist, motivating me to grow in this. It was a pleasure to receive his teachings and his profound and wide knowledge in the symbolic / artistic / technical field. and thanks to his incredible vision! so much to learn. This experience has marked an important point in my spiritual artistic journey, thanks Daniel Mirante! —Dyumna Mercoi
The workshop was amazing. It felt like stepping back in time, learning the ways of the old masters, including learning how to make our own paint. I came away feeling inspired and confident and excited to apply the new techniques I had learned. —Malindi Lovegrove
