Description
Kajama Boat Tour - Presented by Art Spin in partnership with Sidewalk Labs.
We’re so thrilled to set sail and try something new for Art Spin, trading in our bikes for the historic tall ship Kajama. This 3 hour tour will take our audience across Toronto’s inner harbour, around the beautiful islands, and a rare foray into the waterways of the Port Lands.
We are excited to be partnering with Sidewalk Labs to present this unique event. Our inspiring conversations about the use of the waterfront have led us to consider the water itself as a programmable space as well as notions of play and animation in Toronto’s inner harbour. This is the perfect opportunity to draw a connection between our organizations and create an experiential, temporary, and shared art experience across an under-utilized city space.
As part of the thrill and mystery of the Art Spin experience, specific details about the programming will be kept secret until the day of the event. We invite you to trust the curators and allow yourselves to be surprised by both the creative programming and the unusual spaces to which they lead you, however we can’t help but to tease you with a few details. From the sides of the boat, you may come across art installations on land, performative interventions on water, and quizzical messages in the sky, plus a few more surprises presented by The Toronto Biennial of Art. Inspired by our waterfront surroundings, this tour will explore a range of ideas around forced migration, the natural vs. re-naturalized waterways, and the fate of industry in the Port Lands.
We are excited to be joined yet again by our emcee and trumpeter extraordinaire Michael Louis Johnson, as well as DJ General Eclectic who will be sure to keep the wind our sails between the various art projects.
ABOUT THIS TOUR:
The tour will take place on Sunday August 12th. Board the Kajama at 235 Queens Quay W, the boat is docked directly south of the Power Plant and Harbourfront Centre buildings. Boarding begins at 1pm and the boat leaves at 1:30pm sharp. The tour will return to land around 5pm. There will be a cash bar on board the Kajama, no outside alcohol is permitted, and complimentary hors d’oeuvres will be served.
TICKETS:
Tickets for this event are $25, and are only available online and in advance. Given the capacity of the boat, tickets will be limited to 200 so be sure to get yours while they last!
WAIVER:
Please have a look over the waiver found online here. We will have copies and require each audience member to sign before boarding.
WHAT TO BRING:
As this is a rain or shine event we recommend being prepared for both. Bring a light rain jacket and sunscreen. While we are serving hors d’oeuvres on board you are welcome to bring snacks and water if you like.
WEATHER:
While Art Spin events often operate with a rain date this tour is an exception. Due to the many complications and expenses that arise when working on water, this event will be rain or shine, but not to worry, the boat does have extensive covering for both rain and shade, as well as, a lounge below-deck. Please note, we will not be able to refund tickets due to inclement weather, please come prepared for rain or shine.
NOTES ON ACCESSIBILITY:
This event is partially accessible. There is a ramp available to board the Kajama, however folks using a wheelchair may require assistance boarding this ramp, as it extends from the boat to the mainland and can shift with the waves. Unfortunately washrooms on the boat are downstairs and are not accessible. If you have further questions about the physical accessibility of this event and venue, please don’t hesitate to contact us at info@artspin.ca and we will do our best to assist.
