Learn how to cultivate an abundant, healthy backyard orchard perfect for our local climate. Southern California’s mild climate is well suited to grow a variety of different fruit trees, yielding bushels of organic, delicious produce right in your own backyard. With just a few well-adapted trees and some simple principles of ecological design, you'll have an abundant orchard in no time. A home orchard has many benefits, including: Fresh, organic fruit (15-30 lbs per tree, every season) Mulch and shade for your garden (reducing water evaporation and irrigation) and cooling for your home (energy savings) Absorption of CO2 and harmful air pollutants, production of oxygen Habitat for beneficial native birds, insects and animals Improved soil water retention Less dependency on grocery stores, creating savings and independence With the right tools and knowledge, an ecological orchard is simple to start, establish, and maintain. Join us in this workshop to learn how. Together we will: Learn how to design an ecological backyard orchard Learn step-by-step how to start, establish, and maintain a backyard orchard Discuss the fruit tree selection, site preparation, planting, irrigation, pruning, natural pest control, and other techniques to maintain a healthy orchard Observe a diverse fruit tree orchard in action at The Ecology Center All attendees will receive informational hand-outs to complement the subjects covered in the workshop, and take home their own FREE small starter fruit tree! Cancellation Policy: We understand your plans may change. We will give you credit toward a future program if you cancel at least 24 hours in advance. Credit must be redeemed within 90 days of issue. To account for our preparation and our instructor's time, we cannot give refunds or credits if cancelled with less than 24-hours notice or in the event of a no-show.
