Brazil’s presidential election is down to two polarizing candidates, and experts say the runoff will be a major test for one of the world’s largest democracies. On October 31st voters will decide if Bolsonaro stays another term as president or gets replaced by left-wing candidate and former president Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva. Experts say Lula’s victory is likely but how effective can he be in right-wing controlled congress? Will the rejected Bolsonaro accept to results and go quietly or will he try to destabilize Brazil’s politics by amending its constitution or by trying to impeach Lula?
Join the World Affairs Council on November 2nd as we discuss the winner of the election and what it means for Brazil’s future. We will be in conversation with Sarah Maslin, Brazil correspondent for The Economist who is stationed in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
