Description
We are caretakers. We are creatives. We are community-builders. We are doulas supporting doulas. We are born into this.
>>What is a Born into This Pop Up?
Curated by DTI, Born Into This explores social justice, entrepreneurship, technology and creativity. Centered in interdisciplinary thought, these conversations aim to make sense of the birth world’s intersections and context, as well as its relationship to our own practice as members of the field. This Pop Up will bring a piece of the Born Into This experience to your home community in an accessible and thought provoking display. Panel will be viewed from Born into This 2018 digitally and discussion will follow. ALL FUNDS FROM THIS TICKET WILL GO TO THE DTI SCHOLARSHIP FUND FOR PEOPLE OF COLOR AND THE DTI TRANS HEALTH INITIATIVE.
>>What to expect:
At the Born Into This Pop Up we will gather in the evening from 6pm - 9pm and view a digital panel from the 2018 conference followed by a discussion facilitated by DTI Doula and Educator, Simone Toomer.
Digital Panel Viewing: “Decolonizing at the Root: Settler Colonialism, Granny Midwives & the Mayhem of Intersectionality within Birthwork” (In Loving Memory of Erica Garner) A discussion from last years Born Into This with Carmen Lane of ATNSC and Dr. Alicia Bonaparte co-editor of the anthology Birthing Justice: Black Women, Pregnancy, and Childbirth.
The paradox within the field of birthwork--while we are aware of the myriad benefits of the use of midwives and doulas during labor and postpartum, we often shun the complexity of the environment in which birth is taking place. The cumulative impact of years of ignoring the structural dynamics (including race, class, gender, sexual orientation, nation status, etc.) that deeply impact how we enter or not, has contributed to the interruption of countless lives. The mortality of both the birthing person and newborn is cut short because we refuse to take seriously the intergenerational inheritance of the problem of racism and the dilemma of giving birth on stolen land.
