BPI & Official Charts Present: Let's Talk About Music - with Pete Paphides
The BPI and Official Charts Company are partnering to host Let’s Talk About Music on Wednesday, May 6 – an online conversation with acclaimed music writer Pete Paphides who will explore his love of music.
Paphides will appear in conversation with Martin Talbot (the Official Charts chief executive), discussing his brand new memoir Broken Greek, which was published to widespread acclaim last month.
Let’s Talk About Music will run from 5pm to 6pm, and kick-off with a short reading from Paphides, who will then discuss his formative years growing up in Birmingham, the son of Cypriot parents, with the greatest hits of the Seventies and Eighties as his personal soundtrack. Following the reading and Q&A, the digital floor will be thrown open to the audience for questions.
The BPI has already adapted to host online seminars exploring the business side of the music industry, however this new event has been born out of a desire to lift our community’s spirits during these difficult times, by talking about the one love that unites us all: music itself.
The event is free to attend – sign up here so we can keep track of attendees. The details to join on the night will be emailed to you, and can also be found below.
Anyone wishing to order a copy of the book in advance is encouraged to do so via Blackwells here, or Waterstones here.

About Pete Papides and “Broken Greek”
A hugely respected music journalist published in Time Out, the Guardian, Mojo, Q, Observer Music Monthly and The Times, where he spent five years as their Chief Rock Critic, as well making several critically acclaimed music programmes for BBC Radio, Paphides wrote Broken Greek as a coming-of-age memoir about identity, chip shops and, of course, pop songs.
After his parents moved from Cyprus to Birmingham in the 1960s, they opened a fish-and-chip shop in Acocks Green, which became the place where Pete would learn all about British culture. He would become most excited by British music, and the popular hits such as Come On Eileen, Don’t Go Breaking My Heart and Sugar Baby Love that would blast out of the chip shop radio. This inspired a thought that surely all music fans would resonate with: “Do you sometimes feel like the music you’re hearing is explaining your life to you?”.
