Description
Catherine Glynn's A.R.T. (Audacious Raw Theatre) and Lanesboro Arts proudly present Audacious Raw Theatre Year 8: There is a Field at 7 pm on Saturday, July 6th and 5 pm on Sunday, July 7th. Alongside the Root River in scenic Gateway Park, seven or more newly devised dramatic works will be revealed in A.R.T.'s typically raw and wonderful fashion. This year's works center on Parenthood, Procreation, and Reproductive Justice and will feature Katie Berger Wood, Juliana Frick, Hannah Gaff, Catherine Glynn, Nicholette Routhier, Hilary Williams, and Jerome York.
Audience members should bring blankets or lawn chairs to enjoy the show in the natural surroundings of Gateway Park.
Since 2023, Audacious Raw Theatre has been working with the overarching theme of Common Ground. Under this umbrella, they take on stories and performances that, at first glance, may seem polarizing in nature. In 2024, their devised theatre work will explore Parenthood, Procreation, and Reproductive Justice. As ARTists, they actively seek to cultivate and create stories from a wide range of diverse people, reflecting all sides of an issue. In this vein, instead of solely focusing on what may divide us, this year's ARTists will strive to uncover collective values that unite us. Artistic Director Catherine Glynn writes, "Life is a circumference surrounded by circumstances. Without compassion and listening—the capacity to bear witness to another’s circumstances—we lose perspective. We become myopic and self-centered, often self-righteous. We become the center of the circle rather than part of the momentum that moves things forward."
The ARTists' devised work will also be inspired by the poem, There is a Field* by Rumi:
Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
There is a field. I'll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass,
The world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase each other
Doesn't make any sense.
*Translated from Persian by Coleman Barks and John Moyne, from The Essential Rumi, published by Harper Collins.
They will also source inspiration from the works of Diné Activist Pat McCabe: "There is a circle, and within the center of that circle is LIFE"
Finally, in 2024 A.R.T. is partnering with UpLift Physical Theatre to bring their work to a heightened level of poetic movement.
What is devised theatre? It means the ARTists build original theatrical performances from the ground up. Through a series of conversations, writing exercises, movement exploration, and improvisatory theatre techniques, they tease out the stories and performances they want to share with live audiences. In the seven days leading up to their performances, the ARTists will create at least seven wholly original stories to share. They invite folks to observe the devising process in Gateway Park throughout the week.
