Description
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of her smash hit “Hey Mickey” going #1, the GRAMMY Museum is thrilled to welcome GRAMMY-nominated choreographer, dancer, director, producer, recording artist, actress and street dance historian, Toni Basil, for an intimate conversation discussing her extraordinary career with guest moderator, TV presenter/producer, Tina Malavé. Attendees will have the opportunity to see the original “Mickey” cheerleading costume from Toni’s music video for the song, in addition to other various costumes and videos.
Toni Basil is a fascinating and dynamic speaker with a mind blowing resume that goes way beyond her international hit “Hey Mickey.”
Her multi-faceted career began in the 60s as the go-to girl for the popular go-go beach movies. Dubbed, “The Goddess of Go-Go” by Quentin Tarantino, who’s praised her acting roles in the Golden Globe and Academy Award-winning films, Easy Rider and Five Easy Pieces, and additionally stated that the “Daddy’s Song” musical number in The Monkees’ film, HEAD where Toni is partnered with Davy Jones, ranks in his top five favorite American musical movie numbers of all time.
Toni is one of the founding members of the 1970s dance group, “The Lockers” - considered the group that established street dance as a true American art form. With Don Campbellock, Fred “Re-Run” Berry, Shabba Doo, Flukey Luke, Campbell Jr. and Slim The Robot, the group broke boundaries on television, toured with top performers and opened for Frank Sinatra at Carnegie Hall. In 2008 Toni received Hip Hop International’s highest award for her groundbreaking and ongoing contributions to street dance, the “Living Legend of Hip Hop Award”.
Behind the scenes, she has choreography and directorial credits on over 50 music videos, films, TV shows and commercials. Toni was the choreographer called upon to get Tina Turner ready for her solo career after her split with Ike and has additionally choreographed and co-directed concerts and shows for David Bowie, Bette Midler, Mick Jagger, David Lee Roth, Linda Ronstadt, Lily Tomlin, Enrique Iglesias and many others.
Though the 80s is the decade Toni is most known for when she exploded onto MTV with “Hey Mickey” and collaborated on other iconic music videos, like Talking Heads, “Once in a Lifetime,” she’s maintained a major presence in the world of entertainment in every decade since. Whether creating Reese Witherspoon’s classic move, the “Bend & Snap” in Legally Blonde, choreographing Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie in Tarantino’s, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, or going viral on social media with videos of Toni dancing in her mid-seventies, Toni Basil’s eclectic career and contributions to pop culture are unparalleled.
“Hey Mickey,” the addictive anthem, celebrates its 40th anniversary of landing at #1 on the U.S. Billboard charts on December 11th, 2022. The International smash single garnered Double Platinum Records for Toni in the UK, Canada, Mexico and Australia. “Hey Mickey” was released on her 1981 album, Word of Mouth, for which she received a Gold Album, and a GRAMMY nomination for her Word Of Mouth long-form video album (produced, choreographed and directed by Toni). Her video for “Hey Mickey” has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art Calendar and was installed into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as one of the groundbreaking videos and singles of the 1980s.
