JOHN CLAYTON is a natural-born multitasker. The multiple roles in which he excels — composer, arranger, conductor, producer, educator, and yes, extraordinary bassist — garner him a number of challenging assignments and commissions. With a Grammy on his shelf and eight additional nominations, artists such as Diana Krall, Paul McCartney, Regina Carter, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Gladys Knight, Queen Latifah, and Charles Aznavour vie for a spot on his crowded calendar.
In addition to performing with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, founded in 1986, and The Clayton Brothers quintet, John served on the faculty of the USC - Thornton School of Music, for over 20 years. Now, in addition to individual clinics, workshops, and private students across the globe as schedule permits, John also directs the educational components associated with the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, Centrum Festival, and Vail Jazz Party.
Career highlights include arranging the 'Star Spangled Banner" for Whitney Houston's performance at Super Bowl 1990 (the recording went platinum), playing bass on Paul McCartney's CD “Kisses On The Bottom,” arranging and playing bass with Yo-Yo Ma and Friends on "Songs of Joy and Peace," and arranging playing and conducting the 2009 CD "Charles Aznavour with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra," and numerous recordings with Diana Krall, the Clayton Brothers, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Milt Jackson, Monty Alexander and many others.
And along the way, he has served as a mentor to countless young artists, including Katie Thiroux, and Sam Hirsh.
KATIE THIROUX
Brimming with bold sound and moment-to-moment finesse, KATIE THIROUX's playing expresses both individualism and reverence to the lineage. Her self-released debut record Introducing Katie Thiroux (2015) earned the bass player, singer, and composer Best Debut awards from The Huffington Post, All About Jazz, and the 2015 NPR Music Critics Poll. Katie started receiving violin lessons at age 4, acoustic bass lessons at age 8 and was fortunate to study with John Clayton and began voice lessons with Tierney Sutton at age 12.Lending contemporary flair to mainstream stylings, Thiroux carries on the hard-swinging tradition of such bass masters as Ray Brown and John Clayton, while channeling the buoyant vocal finesse of iconic singers including Anita O'Day, Chet Baker and Ella Fitzgerald. Thiroux offers in-the-moment jazz that draws upon the rich history of the music, from swing to bebop and beyond. She will be joined by:
SAM HIRSH
Pianist, composer and educator SAM HIRSH is gaining recognition for his soulful, energetic sound. “Hirsh finds new poetry in the rich vocabulary of the hard bop to post-bop continuum” (Andrew Gilbert). Playing piano since 4, Hirsh was awarded a scholarship to USC Thornton School of Music in 2009 where he was mentored by Russ Ferrante, Otmaro Ruiz and Alan Pasqua. He graduated in 2012 and has been an active member of the LA Jazz scene every since, playing with the Bill Holman Big Band, Melissa Morgan, Henry Franklin, Carl Saunders, Gilbert Castellanos and Roy McCurdy, among others. He’s performed with various acts along the West Coast, Taiwan, Bolivia and New York City.
Hirsh’s debut album Quite Frankly, featuring saxophone icon Ralph Moore, New York heavyweight John Webber on bass, and Los Angeles drummer Kevin Kanner, was released in February 2020 and made JazzWeek Radio Chart’s top 20.
