Join North America’s Cohousing pioneers Charles Durrett and Katie McCamant live January 25th for a special public presentation on Cohousing in Toronto. Learn about the origins of the movement and what inter-generational and senior (50+) Cohousing communities look like in Canada, the US and other parts of the world. Find out how Cohousing supports social connections, a higher quality of life and how you can become part of a forming or existing community. Charles and Katie will touch on the community led development process, how Cohousing can address the loneliness epidemic, issues of affordability, co-care for young families and the elderly, the maximization of both privacy and the commons in design and community governance, the role of developers, architects, planners and other professionals, the different legal and financial structures and more. There will be plenty of time for questions, and you'll have an opportunity to connect with others interested in exploring Cohousing and Coliving! WHAT IS COHOUSING? Cohousing communities consist of private homes that are strategically positioned around pedestrian centric common facilities to maximize social interaction between neighbours. One key characteristic of Cohousing communities is breaking bread together regularly in the Common House. Cohousing communities are created and managed by their residents, who value a healthy mixture of privacy and community. Sustainability and innovation are two words often associated with these communities – natural products of people working with one another for community sake. In 1988, Kathryn McCamant & Charles Durrett coined the term “cohousing” for a Danish concept they spent considerable time learning about in Denmark. Since that time, McCamant and Durrett have worked with groups to create high functioning neighbourhoods in the United States and Canada. Together they have designed over 50 Cohousing communities, and there are over 150 active and forming Cohousing communities (the numbers are growing) to date. LOCATION The event is being held at: IC Savings Credit Union’s Headquarters 5300 Dundas St West Toronto, Ontario M9B 1B2 The branch is conveniently located within a short walk (or cab ride) from Kipling TTC Subway station. There is limited parking available so we recommend taking transit. Please note that the venue is wheel chair accessible. EVENT FEE The cost to attend is $20 inclusive to help us cover the costs associated with the event (security, cleaning, light refreshments, etc.).
