Dan Charnas is an award-winning music and business journalist; producer of records and television; and professor. Recipient of the 2007 Pulitzer Fellowship for Arts Journalism, he is the author of four books including the definitive history of the hip-hop business, The Big Payback. Charnas was the co-creator and executive producer of the VH1 TV series The Breaks; and is an Associate Arts Professor at the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University.
Charnas spent four years researching and reporting Dilla Time: The Life and Afterlife of J Dilla, The Hip-Hop Producer Who Reinvented Rhythm. An outgrowth of a course on J Dilla he developed at NYU in 2017, the book’s roots go back to Charnas’s time in the record business, when he traveled to Detroit in 1999 to work with the producer then known as Jay Dee.
Equal parts biography, musicology, and cultural history, Dilla Time chronicles the life and legacy of J Dilla, a musical genius who transformed the sound of popular music for the twenty-first century by pioneering a new musical time-feel, an accomplishment on par with the achievements of Louis Armstrong and James Brown. Dilla, with only his drum machine, transformed the way traditional musicians play.
Little Dojo and The Academy synergize with Loop Sessions Toronto to present “Crate Stories Live” Crate Stories is an online interview series focusing on music history through dialogue with producers and music specialists (Kcut, Marco Polo, Jake One, Attic, Moss and Black Girls Love Vinyl founder Alexandria Sade). This new live component of Crate Stories will feature a special evening of conversation hosted by Arcee, who will chat with Charnas about his new book Dilla Time during this Canadian exclusive in-person appearance.
Rana “Arcee” Chatterjee is an award-winning creative director, radio personality and musician whose work has been recognized globally by Cannes Lions, The One Club, ESPN, Complex, Billboard, Vibe and others. He spent 17 years as the host of Toronto’s seminal underground hip-hop show The Real Frequency and currently hosts Crate Stories for Loop Sessions Toronto. He’s also the co-founder of Live Convention, an annual local festival dedicated to celebrating crate digging culture from around the world. As a musician, his extra curricular projects have attracted the attention of luminaries like Questlove, DJ Premier and Beck.
Q&A and book signing will follow the conversation.
