Laila, you are now five years old. You have started to ask me where I grew up and why we can't visit. This is my answer to you.
Dear Laila is an interactive installation that recreates a family home in Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus. Centred on a miniature model, the installation uses audio, photographs and objects to bring this now destroyed place to life.
The installation is experienced by a single audience member at a time. Each experience is approximately 15 minutes.
Audiences are guided through the installation by a series of action cards, which invite them to listen to a 9-minute audio piece, explore objects and photos, read a letter, and finally take home a pinch of salt in a matchbox, echoing a ritual performed by the artist’s grandmother.
The installation is accompanied by an audience guide, and can be open the entire day and/ or night for the duration of the showing. Audience members can choose an English or Arabic version, and translations into other languages can be arranged on request.
