About Franke:Born and raised in New Brunswick, New Jersey to Franke Previte Sr. (an opera singer), Previte was with the New Jersey rock quintet Franke and the Knockouts as the singer and songwriter. Previously he had sung with the Oxford Watch Band and the heavy metal band Bull Angus.
Franke and the Knockouts were signed by Millennium Records in 1981 and had three U.S. Top 40 singles, as well as two Top 50 albums. Their biggest single, "Sweetheart", was written by Previte and Knockout guitarist Billy Elworthy, and became a Top 10 hit in 1981. The group's other two Top 40 hits were "You're My Girl" and "Without You (Not Another Lonely Night)".
The band switched to MCA Records in 1984, and split up around 1986. Previte co-wrote music for the hit soundtrack for the 1987 movie Dirty Dancing, including "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," and Eric Carmen's hit "Hungry Eyes".
Academy Award for Best Achievement in Music; Best Song for 1987 for Dirty Dancing's "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" with co-composers John DeNicola and Donald Markowitz.
That same year Previte also received a Golden Globe and a Grammy nomination. "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" also won the ASCAP song of the year award. In 2014, the song was chosen as one of ASCAP's top 100 songs ever written, landing at number 15.
Previte was chosen as one of America's top 25 songwriters to represent the US in a songwriter summit in the USSR, which resulted in a release of an album called Music Speaks Louder Than Words in 1990.
Today, Previte helps raise money for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network charity in Patrick Swayze's honor. He continues to raise money for the charity with his new band, The Brotherhood. "If you're a songwriter then you're in the Brotherhood,” said Previte.About John:John is an American songwriter and producer. He is best known for co-writing the song "(I've Had) The Time of My Life", for which he won both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award, as well as receiving a Grammy nomination, in 1988. In 1989 he was the co-winner of ASCAP Awards' "Most Performed Songs from Motion Pictures" for "Time of My Life" as well as for "Hungry Eyes", another song from the film.[1] In addition to Dirty Dancing hits for Bill Medley, Jennifer Warnes and Eric Carmen, he has also written songs with and for Eddie Money, John Waite, Kristine W, Steve Holy, Jeannie Kendall, Sugar Jones, Annie Haslam, Bernie Worrell, The Sighs and Martin Briley.
A native of Smithtown, New York and a longtime resident of Greenwich Village, DeNicola began his musical career as a bass player with "Flight", a band which recorded for Motown in 1980 and was sampled by Erikah Badu on her hit song "Back in the Day". He played with several other acts before changing his career. Although his songwriter portfolio includes music written for and performed by other artists, he is best known for his collaboration with Franke Previte and Donald Markowitz on the award-winning songs for Dirty Dancing.
DeNicola shared an imprint, Omad/Paradigm Records, through which he produced a number of albums, before creating his own studio, Jake's Kitchen Sink. Kara's Flowers, who went on to become Maroon 5, are among the artists he has produced for. In September 2019 John DeNicola released his debut album of songs he has written called "The Why Because" which include his synth pop version of "Hungry Eyes" and a stripped down acoustic guitar and brass section version of "I've Had The Time Of My Life". Also included is "In God's Shadow" which he wrote with John Waite, Anthony Krizan and lyrics by Keith Reid (Whiter Shade Of Pale) with Mickey Madden (Maroon 5) on bass. DeNicola continues to write songs and works with new musical talent.
About Franke Previte:
Franke Previte was born in New Brunswick, N.J. His father was an opera singer and was Franke's first musical inspiration. Franke’s first album was released in 1971 with a metal band call Bull Angus on Mercury Records. The band toured with Rod Stewart and the Faces, Deep Purple, and Fleetwood Mac, and also played the three-day Pocono Mountain Festival with such notable groups as Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Humble Pie, Three Dog Night, and many more.
In the late ‘70s, Franke signed with Buddha Records, where he was produced in a more R&B direction by Grammy-winning producer Tony Camillo.
In the early ‘80s, Franke decided to combine his rock and R&B roots for some blue-eyed soul-style rock ‘n’ roll, and started Franke & the Knockouts. The band was signed to Millenium Records (RCA), and its first hit single, SWEETHEART, reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1981. YOU’RE MY GIRL and WITHOUT YOU (NOT ANOTHER LONELY NIGHT) quickly followed, topping the charts at #14 and #16 respectively.
When the president of the label, Jimmy Ienner, decided to close his label in 1985, Franke & the Knockout were sold to MCA, which released the band’s third and final album, Makin the Point.
Late in 1986, Franke was contacted by the same Jimmy Ienner to write a song for a little movie called DIRTY DANCING, and so the song (I’VE HAD) THE TIME OF MY LIFE was written. Franke’s other DIRTY DANCING hit, HUNGRY EYES, originally had been on Previte's demo reel as a new Franke & the Knockouts track while he was shopping for a new record deal for the band. “Hungry Eyes” found its home in DIRTY DANCING, and became Franke’s second smash hit for the film. The song “(I've) Had The Time Of My Life” earned Previte an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Grammy nomination. What a year!
The honors continued with Franke being chosen as one of America’s top song writers to represent the USA in a “songwriters’ summit” in Moscow. Other attendees were Barry Mann, Mike Stoller (of Leiber & Stoller), Diane Warren, Desmond Child, and Cyndi Lauper, to name a few.
Franke continues to work on new projects such as the Broadway bound stage musical for Dirty Dancing, and is working hard on a cause close to his heart -- raising funds through his music for two pancreatic cancer charities in memory of his friend, Patrick Swayze.
About: John DeNicola
An Academy Award-winning songwriter, John DeNicola has channeled his lifelong passion for music into a remarkably vibrant career in the recording industry. His songwriting successes include co-writing the hit singles “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” and “Hungry Eyes” for the Dirty Dancing soundtrack, playing a key role in the movie’s emergence as an enduring cultural phenomenon. As founder of the indie label Omad Records, he’s discovered and fostered the careers of a diverse range of musical acts (including Kara’s Flowers, a band now known as Maroon 5). Also an accomplished producer, DeNicola has brought his finely honed instincts and vast experience to collaborations with legendary artists from all corners of the music world.
Originally from Long Island, DeNicola got his start in music by playing bass in a local band in junior high. He later landed a deal with Motown Records as the bassist for jazz fusion group Flight, whose song “Face to Face” was sampled in Erykah Badu’s 2003 hit “Back in the Day (Puff).” After a stint in playing bass with major pop artists like Paul Young and Corey Hart, DeNicola shifted his focus to songwriting and production. Early on in that chapter of his career, DeNicola teamed up with fellow musician Franke Previte and co-wrote “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” and “Hungry Eyes,” then submitted both for consideration for the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. Out of more than 150 songs, the former was selected for the movie’s iconic finale, and soon cemented its place in cinematic history.
Earning DeNicola an Oscar and a Golden Globe Award (as well as a Grammy Award nomination), “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” quickly shot to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Meanwhile, “Hungry Eyes” reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, with the Dirty Dancing soundtrack holding at #1 on the Billboard 200 album sales chart for a staggering 18 weeks—and eventually selling more than 60 million copies worldwide. In 1988, DeNicola received the distinguished honor of being named ASCAP Songwriter of the Year.
In the wake of Dirty Dancing’s smash success, DeNicola moved forward with his songwriting career, penning tracks for such artists as Eddie Money, John Waite, and Parliament-Funkadelic’s Bernie Worrell. In 1995 he founded Omad Records, with a mission of helping passionately authentic and steadfastly original artists to fully realize their musical vision. Within a year the label had signed Kara’s Flowers, (later Maroon 5) as well as made its inaugural release with The Sighs’ acclaimed sophomore effort Different.
Based in New York City, DeNicola produces most of the albums in the Omad Records catalogue, such as the critically praised 2015 debut from singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Arwen Lewis (daughter of Moby Grape’s Peter Lewis) , Rust Dust "Diviners and Shivs" and The Sighs New release "Wait On Another Day". Over the past decade, he’s also served as a composer for the annual Shakespeare in the Valley program at the West Kortright Centre (an arts and community center located in the northern Catskills). In addition, DeNicola is currently at work on his debut solo album, featuring both original material and cover versions.
