Dümtek presents Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek + Anadol (DJ Set)
Following the huge success of their first event, Queer Gazino: An Alternative Pride Celebration, Dümtek hosts Anatolian psych-pop sensation Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek, a virtuosic super-group which performs an electrified and highly danceable reinterpretation of Turkish psychedelia. The highly anticipated show taking place at Gretchen Club on the 14th November 2019 sees Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek celebrate the Berlin launch of their debut album. With psychedelic folk, folk and progressive rarities from our planet Gözen Atila aka Anadol will be warming up the vibe of the night.
Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek
Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek’s music combines Anatolian folk and modern grooves combined with hints of psychedelia, jazz and funk. Led by Derya Yıldırım’s hypnotizing saz and vocals, Grup Şimşek deliver their own interpretation of Turkish jewels (by artists such as Selda Bağcan, Mahzuni Şerif, Özdemir Erdoğan), but also draw their originality from beautiful compositions and a fantastic ability in improvising.
Born in 2014, Grup Şimşek is an "outernational" band with members hailing from four different countries – Turkey, Germany, UK, France. The line-up consist of Derya Yıldırım, the talented singer and multi-instrumentalist from Turkey, Graham Mushnik and Antonin Voyant from London/France-based collective Catapulte Records and Greta Eacott, the British composer and percussionist (G-Bop Orchestra, One Take Records).
Following the release of Nem Kaldı, the band toured Europe, from small clubs to prestigious festival stages such as End of The Road Festival, Fusion Festival, B-Sides Festival, Festival Theaterformen and appeared live on BBC Radio 3, France Inter and German-French TV channel Arte. They shared the stage with artists such as Selda Bağcan or Turkish psych legends Baba Zula.
‘Kar Yağar’, Debut Album Launch
Two years after their successful debut EP kickoff, Anatolian psych-pop sensation Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek released their debut album, Kar Yağar in May 2019.
Over the course of 12 tracks, the powerful sound of the bağlama (Turkish lute) and Derya Yıldırım’s stunning vocals, build and unravel stories together with the guitars, organs, drums, flute and bass.
Kar Yağar ('Snow Falls') has the dynamics of an epic journey through the Anatolian highlands; where deep-rooted folk effortlessly switches to sparkly improvisation or dancy pop tracks. The album was self produced at their studio in the French Alps, and the band's tour de force resides in their ability to develop their personal sound and approach whilst keeping their hearts tuned to Derya Yıldırım's Anatolian roots.
Anadol
Anadol represents Gözen Atila’s liberation from a rather academic approach to electronic composition which she pursued during her music technology studies in Istanbul. As a producer of radio plays and an expert field recording artist she has developed a distinct sense of timing, editing and sound design. Her Anadol project walks in the footsteps of lone synth experimentalists like Bruce Haack and The Space Lady with their childlike curiosity for electronic sounds, pushing the boundaries of minimal equipment.
Dümtek
Dümtek is a Berlin-based collective organizing music-focused events designed to challenge stereotypical and orientalist representations of Anatolian and Middle Eastern music culture. Dümtek was conceived as a means of creating new spaces for underrepresented artists from Turkey and the Middle East, focusing on those who leverage music as a form of resistance and a means of questioning existing power structures in society.
Dümtek event series is possible with the kind support of Musicboard and Initiative Musik.
