Over three days we will break down all aspects of the drum recording process. On Friday afternoon, we will discover the importance of preparing your drums for recording. Shawn’s experience as a touring drum technician will help you understand the choices made before recording and how they impact your final results. Drum choice, head selection, tuning and dampening, cymbals and hardware, placement and highly guarded studio secrets will all be covered in this first half day. Saturday’s class will cover the micing, setup and execution of the recording session. This will be everything from mic selection, mic placement, mic techniques, outboard gear choices and use, minimal micing vs. extravagant micing, phase and polarity, headphone mixes and finally Casey Cooper recording a song. Sunday’s class will dive into the post production of the drum recording process. Comping, editing, sample creation and placement, creating midi from your recording, prepping for mixing and finally drum mixing techniques, covering routing and plug in choices for consistent results.
