Emporium Melbourne is located on the site of the former Myer Emporium, one of the oldest and best known shopping destinations in the city. This 11-storey Lonsdale Street store opened in 1925. The current Emporium building retains its former facades, address and name to keep its sense of history alive. The Lonsdale Street side features the largest of the restored façades. The design by The Buchan Group links the former Myer Lonsdale Street store to the redeveloped Myer flagship store, David Jones, Melbourne’s GPO, The Strand Melbourne and Melbourne Central, creating a newly integrated shopping precinct that offers a total 188,000m² of retail, with almost 1,000 retailers. When designing the current redeveloped building, there was a focus on allowing natural light to penetrate through all levels, even below the ground level. Finishes throughout are of a very high quality, including timber-detailed ceilings in the malls as well as polished stone tiles and bluestone accents which are reminiscent of the city’s laneways. The media screen on the corner of Swanston and Lonsdale Streets is the biggest of its kind in the southern hemisphere. It is particularly valuable to advertisers as it has full video movement across the entire screen.
