Leah Isquith-Dicker
Humans rely on one another to address life’s challenges; research has confirmed that these collections of relationships, or social networks, are also associated with important health outcomes. However, there has been little in-depth research on how the characteristics of people in networks, like age or income, and the types of support they provide, might be associated with health. These are especially interesting questions in the community where I have worked in the outskirts of Lima, Peru. Women in these new informal settlements are raising their children far from their natal families and face additional challenges related to poverty and the fight for basic services. Their social network members serve important roles in these endeavors.
Hally Stone
Hally will talk about coastal upwelling and how it drives primary productivity in the Pacific Northwest coastal ocean. Coastal upwelling is a wind-driven process that occurs during the summer when wind blows southward along the coast, pushing water offshore, and causing deep, nutrient-rich water to fill the void left behind. Primary producers, like phytoplankton, that live at the surface use these nutrients to grown and in turn provide food for larger animals, feeding commercial fisheries in this region. Thus, variability in wind patterns in space and on seasonal timescales can affect the productivity of fisheries through control of the nutrient supply.
Itzue Caviedes Solis
Why and how tree frog species live where they do? Itzue will talk about the variation in swimming speed and behavior in Mexican tree frogs, how limb lengths and habitats influence how they swim, and how all of these characteristics evolved in closely related species.
