Best friends since college, Lea (Kelsey Falconer) and Gabby (Chelsea Preston) enjoy a blissful cottage vacation. When Lea’s boyfriend (Tyson Coady) arrives, and the three prepare to put on a reimagined production of ‘Rapunzel’ for the neighbouring cottagers, tensions begin to rise between the group as they discuss artistry, privilege, and ideas of womanhood. As the group gears up for their performance, Lea gradually descends into a psychosis that exposes the struggles of being expected to live up to an outdated standard of womanhood.
Fortescue is an honest and vivid portrayal of the dynamics at play within female friendships, within the relationships between women and men, and mental health struggles. Through its characters and their relationships with one another and with themselves, the film draws fascinating and thought-provoking connections between theatrical performance, psychosis, and the female impulse to perform for men.
Trigger Warning: This film contains scenes of sexual and domestic violence.
