Lanesboro Arts is thrilled to continue its longstanding collaboration with the Frozen River Film Festival (FRFF), with a special set of short documentary films from this year’s festival! Join us on Saturday, March 16th at 7:00 pm at the historic St. Mane Theatre to enjoy five short, fascinating films: Soundscape, Paddle Tribal Waters, The Black Mermaid, The Orchestra Chuck Built, and The Exchange Girl. This compelling and hopeful set features a blind global adventure athlete, a group of indigenous youth learning to whitewater kayak, a dangerous history of women working in silent film post-production, the largest majority Black orchestra in the country, and a modern day tale of The Black Mermaid: free-diver Zandile Ndhlovu.
The set will run 75 minutes long, including a 10 minute intermission. Tickets are on sale now for $15; $12 for Lanesboro Arts and FRFF Members.
Soundscape15 minutes; Directed by Timmy ONeillSoundscape features Erik Weihenmayer, a global adventure athlete and author who is fully blind, as he ascends a massive alpine rock face deep in the Sierra Nevada. Using expert camera work and emotive, novel animation to bring to life a concept by adaptive climbing pioneer Timmy ONeill, the film is a surprising and soulful adventure.
Paddle Tribal Waters9 minutes; Directed by Rush Sturges and Paul Robert Wolf WilsonWhen the largest dam removal project in history begins, a group of indigenous youth learn to whitewater kayak in hopes of becoming the first people to paddle the restored river from source to sea. With jaw-dropping aerial cinematography and moving storytelling, Paddle Tribal Waters is a fully immersive experience, showcasing the unbreakable bond between people and their ancestral lands.
The Exchange Girl9 minutes; Directed by George LarkinThe Exchange Girl is a short documentary about women working in dangerous conditions in silent film post-production. Those positions did provide women with an entry point to film work, but those jobs suddenly disappeared with the coming of sound.
The Orchestra Chuck Built23 minutes; Directed by Christopher StoudtThrough ICYOLA - The Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles — the largest majority Black orchestra in the country — former lawyer-turned-conductor Chuck Dickerson is creating life-changing opportunities for his community that did not previously exist. The Orchestra Chuck Built is a loving portrait of a tireless mentor and a testament to the transformative power of music.
The Black Mermaid9 minutes; Directed by Zandile NdhlovuThroughout history, Black communities have had a treacherous relationship with water, depicted as a powerful yet destructive entity by African folklore. This is a story never told before, but necessary now more than ever: a modern day tale of the Black Mermaid, Zandile Ndhlovu, who is changing the perception of the ocean in her community since 2016, when she overcame her fears and fell in love with freediving.
About Frozen River Film FestivalThis year’s Frozen River Film Festival took place from February 4th - 11th in Winona, Minnesota. The annual festival shows documentary films and programming that educates and activates our community to become involved in the world. These programs provide a unique perspective on environmental issues, sustainable communities, adventure travel and sports, and diverse cultures while showcasing the art of documentary film. Starting in 2012, Lanesboro Arts has partnered with FRFF to screen documentary films at the St. Mane Theatre.
