Global Citizen convenes the best minds in movement building to equip change-makers, marketers and everyday citizens with the tools they need to understand, learn from, and share best practices. Through a series of keynotes, fireside chats and TED style talks, experts from a diversity of fields— ranging across the arts, culture, political, social good, marketing and behavioral science spheres — share their perspectives on how to build movements that can achieve the Global Goals by 2030.

What sparks a movement that changes the world? Does it require the right moment or the utterly wrong event to light our collective emotional fire? Does it need the passion of a new generation that claims its voice or does it require big-picture leaders at the top to articulate a vision that moves the masses? Is the key ingredient power? Empathy? Collaboration? And what does it take to build and sustain movements once that initial spark has faded?
Movement Makers is an opportunity to connect across generations, communities and experiences. The idea is to make surprising connections - between ideas and people - and for everyone to collectively work towards change - keeping in mind the following themes:
Empathy
Lasting movements are empathetic in recognizing and appealing to individual and collective humanity.
Collaboration
Nobody does it alone. Great movements involve working in collaboration.
Readiness
Every successful movement maker needs a set of common, tangible skills.
This year’s Movement Maker participants bring a wealth of experience in leading and shaping movements related to civil rights, education reform, environmental protection, gender equality, disability rights, changing cultural perceptions, youth leadership, mindfulness, and much more!
Some of the featured speakers include:
American Civil Rights activist and icon Minnijean Brown-Trickey, one of the Little Rock Nine who desegregated Little Rock Central High School in 1957 – a major civil rights milestone that altered the course of education in America. Movement Makers will mark the 61st anniversary of the date the Little Rock Nine first entered Little Rock High School. Ms. Brown-Trickey is the recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal, the Wolf Award, and the Spingarn Medal, among numerous other accolades.
Czech model and philanthropist Petra Němcová, who currently serves as co-founder and vice chair of All Hands and Hearts – Smart Response, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing fast and effective support to communities hit by natural disasters worldwide. Ms. Němcová is also an advisory board member of the acclaimed Glamour’s Women of the Year Fund.
Word Bank President Jim Yong Kim, who is leading the organization’s efforts to eliminate global poverty by 2030. He has also served as President of Dartmouth College and Director of the World Health Organization's HIV/AIDS department, as well as held professorships at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. In 1987, he co-founded Partners In Health, a non-profit medical organization that now works in poor communities on four continents. Mr. Kim has received a MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship, was recognized as one of America's "25 Best Leaders" by U.S. News & World Report, and was named one of TIME magazine's "100 Most Influential People in the World."
Environmental organizer and Mumbai resident, Afroz Shah, who is responsible for leading the world’s largest successful beach clean-up program. The massive initiative by Mumbaikars was also joined by members of the United Nations, including Eric Solheim, Chief of the United Nation Environment Programme and Lewis Pugh, the UN Patron of the Oceans. Mr. Shah is a recipient of the Champion of the Earth award, the top environmental honor of the United Nations.
This is a participatory, interactive experience that will bring together 500 leaders, citizens and campaigners to give and gain invaluable tools for starting and mobilizing powerful movements. We want to engage, equip and empower more people to help change the world for the better.
