Hailu Mergia
The Ethiopian accordionist, keyboardist and bandleader Hailu Merga is one of the veterans of contemporary jazz history. In the 70s of the past century he rose to prominence as the leader of the jazz and funk formation Walias Band. When he immigrated to the USA in the 80s, he self-released various pieces which were rediscovered decades later by the label Awesome Tapes from Africa. From this fruitful connection finally emerged the timeless, legendary late work "Lala Belu" which received critical acclaim throughout the globe, for example from the NY Times, which listed it as one of the best 200 albums of the 2010s, the BBC or Pitchfork. After more than six decades as an active musician, "Lala Belu" became the ultimate breakthrough. With its vast abundance of harmonies, rhythms and sheer variety of musical influences, it immediately became an indispensable classic of jazz as well as funk. At the show in May, the genius will present brand-new pieces from its successor "Yene Mircha" which will be released in March.
