Description
Join us on January 16, 2020 for In/Visible Talks.
In/Visible Talks is a conference for creative professionals that celebrates the art of design. In 2020, we’re asking our speakers—and attendees—to GO BEYOND the expected perspectives, guardrails, materials, and thinking. The creative process isn’t always a linear one and there’s much to be gained by hearing how others have navigated the rich and variegated landscape of people, ideas, deadlines, and passion. Our programming focuses on fresh takes and honest talks about the process, inspiration, and challenges behind the creative practice.

Charts & Crafts: Telling Stories with Everyday Objects - $150
facilitated by Michelle Rial
9am - 12pm at 184 Hooper St, San Francisco
In this workshop, you'll experiment with telling short visual stories using the objects around you. This workshop will be taught by Michelle Rial, the author of "Am I Overthinking This? Over-answering life's questions in 101 charts". Her book was born out of an ongoing struggle with chronic repetitive strain injuries; many of the charts use real-life objects to help illustrate everyday ruminations.
Beyond Diversity Awareness: Designing for Equity - $150
facilitated by Antionette D. Carroll
9am - 12pm at 184 Hooper St, San Francisco
What are the roles of equity, history, and power in designing outcomes that either uphold or dismantle oppressive systems? How have our perspectives been shaped by the various environments and influences we’ve interacted with throughout our lives? In this interactive introductory workshop, participants will learn about and apply award-winning Equity-Centered Community Design strategies to examine how their own identities shape design and decision-making and begin to develop the personal foundation for becoming a new type of civic leader: an Equity Designer (or Design Ally working in solidarity). Also, participants will explore the reality that systems produce what they are designed to produce, and that we can and must redesign for equity.
Using the Creative Process to Guide Your Career - $150
facilitated by Jasmine Friedl
1pm - 4pm at 184 Hooper St, San Francisco
In this workshop, you will explore and practice what it means to use the creative process on your biggest project: your career! We'll examine and discuss concepts of preparation, incubation, illumination, and verification in the context of different career paths and trajectories, and we'll work through exercises that you'll be able to apply as regular practices. Participants are invited to an inclusive and safe learning environment where we can discover and learn from each other.
Design For Good: Hackathon - $20
facilitated by Camile Matonis
9am - 1pm at 184 Hooper St, San Francisco
Join UX/UI Designer Camille Matonis, San Francisco chapter leader of Make a Mark, in this half-day hackathon style workshop that will explore "Designing Solutions to Food Waste." Three food-focused nonprofits will present the challenges they face in their organizations with a focus on designing solutions to the issue of food waste.
Attendees will be randomly assigned teams which will each be given 3 hours to learn about their assigned nonprofit, ideate solutions to issues of food waste, get feedback, and deliver a final product. The exercise will provide an opportunity for the organizations to get fresh new perspectives and apply a design thinking methodology to the problems they are facing. It will give participants an opportunity to learn more about food waste and inspire them to cultivate new ways to minimize the food waste in their lives and/or communities.
[Workshop tickets do not include admission to the conference on January 16th. Each workshop requires a specific registration.]
