Opened in 1878 and decommissioned in the 1990s, Jack’s Magazine is an intriguing former explosives store by the banks of the Maribyrnong River. Built into an escarpment, and concealed behind a bluestone perimeter wall, it is largely hidden from view. For Open House Melbourne 2018, Working Heritage will invite visitors inside the bluestone wall for an in-depth guided tour of the tunnels, tramways and towering earth mounds of this remarkable heritage place. Visitors will have a guided walking tour of the site’s main buildings – including the cavernous 19th century gunpowder store. This is a chance to get a first-hand look at a place currently closed to the public. A must for those intrigued by Melbourne’s industrial heritage places and the opportunities for their adaptive re-use. Jack’s Magazine is a significant heritage place on Crown land managed by Working Heritage. The Victorian Government has appointed Working Heritage to conserve, adapt and revitalise Jack's Magazine. They are now developing new uses for the site.
