On September 30th we are having a fundraiser for Juliana Abel.
Juliana is a beautiful, sensitive and strong young lady that is 23 years old and has end stage renal disease (ARPKD/CHF). She has been on dialysis for almost 4 years. Being on dialysis for a long period of time has very negative impacts on the body and Juliana has been impacted greatly.She has had multiple hospital stays due to infections, developing gastroparesis, hepatic encephalopathy, low blood counts, just to name a few, she has had to have multiple surgeries, blood transfusions and procedures in the past 3 years.The dozen + blood infusions she’s had themselves have raised the number of antibodies in her blood to extreme. She even has developed unusual antibodies.This alone has made her chance of receiving a transplant almost impossible.She’s had multiple people try to give, but the antibodies have attacked the blood of every last person who has tried to give to her.
Earlier this year, Juliana informed her family that if she didn’t have any hope of a transplant by August that she would end her dialysis, essentially ending her life. Prayers were asked for lifted and answered!
NYU contacted UofM looking for a candidate to put in a drug trial. They are specifically looking for people with End Stage Renal, that are on dialysis, that have been unable to get a transplant due to high antibodies! NYU believes Juliana would be a great candidate for this 20 person trial!!!!! She’s been accepted and if her blood accepts the drug. She will go to NYU to get the drug infused and if they can get a negative crossmatch after 24 hours, she will be transplanted the next day!!!!!!!!!!
That’s where the fundraiser comes in. In order to go to NYU, we have to prove that we have the funding to go to New York and are prepared to be there for at least a month. New York City is a VERY expensive area. We need to show that we have at least $5,000 to sustain us staying there for the month.Juliana’s mother recently lost her job due to having to take Juliana to UofM and NYC over the past few months. Also, her mother has many gallstones and has to have her gallbladder removed. Her job couldn’t allow her to continue to keep taking so much time off and it was a business decision to let her go. They were very supportive for a long time, but the situation was just overwhelming for all. So they are sustaining there living situation with Juliana’s father’s job, but they don’t have the extra money to fund this trip to NYU.
We are very appreciative of any support they receive and feel very blessed at the outpouring of love and prayers they receive.
