Description
Join Art Conservator Cyndie Lack at Ross Bay Villa Historic House Museum for an exploration into the unusual life of South African born Sergeant Joseph Loxton Rawbon. Journey to 19th century Toronto as seen through the eyes of the self-dubbed “Master Restorer”, who was not only a photographer, gunsmith, and artist, but also an inventor, art dealer, and art restorer. Rawbon brushed up against a cast of characters including Thomas Edison, General Electric pioneer William Symes Andrews, and an early Governor General of Canada, the Marquess of Lorne (husband of Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria). The lecture will also visit Kingston, Ontario during the First World War. Queens University in Kingston is the location of Canada’s only graduate degree program in art conservation.
Over the past 25 years the 1865 Ross Bay Villa has been meticulously restored, following modern restoration standards. Sergeant Rawbon, were he to visit today, might be quite surprised to learn how much these standards have changed since his day!
