Join us on Thu, July 14 for a 2022 BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! performance of A Thousand Thoughts: A Live Documentary with the Kronos Quartet Written and Directed by Sam Green and Joe Bini, with opener Roomful of Teeth.
Legendary classical-music group Kronos Quartet and filmmaker Sam Green take the stage to create a “live documentary,” wildly creative and experimental in form, that chronicles Kronos’ groundbreaking career through archival footage, photos, and interviews with longtime collaborators like Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, Terry Riley, Tanya Tagaq, and Steve Reich. GRAMMY-winning vocal ensemble Roomful Of Teeth, relentless explorers of global music traditions in their own right, starts things off.
*Please Note: Chairs will be available at this show, but you are also permitted to bring your own. For our d/Deaf and hard of hearing communities, we will have an ASL interpreter at the left side of the stage during the opening set only.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Sam Green is a New York-based documentary filmmaker. He received his Master’s Degree in Journalism from University of California, Berkeley, where he studied documentary filmmaking with the acclaimed filmmaker Marlon Riggs. Green’s most recent projects are the “live documentaries” The Measure of All Things (2014), The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller with Yo La Tengo (2012), and Utopia in Four Movements (2010). His performance work has screened at venues such as the Barbican, The Kitchen, TBA Festival, Fusebox Festival, Brighton Festival, and many others. Green’s 2004 feature-length film, the Academy Award–nominated documentary The Weather Underground, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, was broadcast on PBS, was included in the 2004 Whitney Biennial, and has screened widely around the world.
For 45 years, San Francisco’s Kronos Quartet – David Harrington (violin), John Sherba (violin), Hank Dutt (viola), and Sunny Yang (cello) – has combined a spirit of fearless exploration with a commitment to continually reimagine the string quartet experience. In the process, Kronos has become one of the world’s most celebrated and influential ensembles, performing thousands of concerts, releasing more than 60 recordings, collaborating with an eclectic mix of composers and performers, and commissioning over 1000 works and arrangements for string quartet. They have won over 40 awards, including the prestigious Polar Music, Avery Fisher, and Edison Klassiek Oeuvre Prizes. The nonprofit Kronos Performing Arts Association manages all aspects of Kronos’ work, including the commissioning of new works, concert tours and home season performances, education programs, and the annual Kronos Festival. In 2015, Kronos launched Fifty for the Future: The Kronos Learning Repertoire, an education and legacy project that is commissioning—and distributing for free—50 new works for string quartet written by composers from around the world.
Roomful of Teeth is a Grammy Award-winning vocal octet dedicated to reimagining the expressive potential of the human voice. By engaging collaboratively with artists, thinkers, and community leaders from around the world, the group seeks to uplift and amplify voices old and new while creating and performing meaningful and adventurous music. Founder Brad Wells handpicked a group of the most versatile singers from around the United States, whose voices cover a five-octave range from ground-shaking lows to bird-trilling highs. Through rigorous study with experts and icons of vocal traditions the world over, Roomful of Teeth continuously expands its vocabulary of singing techniques and, through ongoing commissioning projects, forges not just new music but an entirely new type of repertoire.
