Description
LABYRINTH #5: Melancholia
The beast inside us awakes after a long hibernation… the LABYRINTH has returned. A new format for a new era - the same high quality performances.
/// THE 1781 COLLECTIVE PRESENTS:
A Cabinet of Curiosities. An Exhibition of Performances. A Geisterbahn of musical and artistic experiences. The long-awaited FIFTH edition of the continuously sold-out LABYRINTH series after a two-year hiatus: completely evolved and re-formatted, whilst maintaining the values and mystique of the original concept. Join us in an epic celebration of weltschmerz and woe, a journey to heart of darkness and its accompanying beauty with LABYRINTH #5: Melancholia.
/// WHAT:
12 micro-performances from leading Berlin artists, showcasing a complete range of classical music and performance, all whilst exploring the depths of the phenomenal Musikbrauerei: still one of Berlin’s best kept secret underground venues - all in under 90 minutes. New performers, new format, the same incredible experience. One day only - Sunday November 12th, 2023.
/// WHY:
The LABYRINTH was initially a response to the creative challenges encountered during the Covid-19 lockdown of 2020, and has since evolved into a perennially sold-out series of promenade performances that showcase the wealth of Berlin’s independent classical performance scene. The return of the LABYRINTH will feature a re-designed audience experience, with YOU at the heart of the narrative, free to explore the entire space at your own desire, whilst discovering the intimate and unique performances that made the original events so memorable.
/// HOW:
Audiences will be able to select one of four 90-minute sessions during ticket purchase, and after entering the LABYRINTH, be encouraged to disperse and explore every nook and cranny of the entire maze that lies under the dormant 19th-century brewery, encountering up to TWELVE performances along the way - a tasting menu of Berlin’s finest non-traditional performers. A constant carousel of music, theatre, and dance awaits the most intrepid and curious explorers, with surprises and genuinely beautiful experiences behind every door.
A bar will be set up during and after the event - with a new space opened at the venue for relaxing after the performance; whilst re-entrance will be offered at a discounted rate for those who wish to enter the LABYRINTH again…

“Man, the bravest animal and most prone to suffer, does not deny suffering as such: he wills it, he even seeks it out, provided he is shown a meaning for it, a purpose of suffering.” - Friedrich Nietschze, ‘On The Genealogy of Morals’
“To live is to suffer, to survive is to find meaning in the suffering. If there is a purpose in life at all, there must be a purpose in suffering” - Gordon Allport, preface to Viktor Frankl’s ‘Man's Search for Meaning’

All questions will be answered at arrival at the venue, and don’t hesitate to email info@1781collective.com with any queries prior to the performance.
/////FAQs
Q. Will the show be similar to the first four editions?
A. We have spent the past two years developing a completely new experience for the audience, whilst still retaining all of the original magic and value, plus more. For those who have attended any of the previous LABYRINTH’s, you will surely pick up on the similarities in journey and style - whilst simultaneously enjoying the entirely new format.
Q. Where can I resell my ticket?
A. If you have purchased a ticket, you are welcome to resell it and transfer the name via your Universe account, or via a trusted source such as TicketSwap. Please watch out for scammers as the date gets closer!
Q. Can I access a press pass?
A. If you work in the media and are interested in attending our event, please email info@1781collective.com for any requests!
Q. Will there be drinks available at the venue?
A. Finally, yes! We will have at least two bar spaces open throughout the entire performance and a chat-and-relax bar space open for afterwards.
Q. Is it child-friendly?
A. Not overly - the space itself and some of the performances are quite intense! We recommend a minimum age of 13.
Q. Can I buy a ticket at the door?
A. Yes! Though as every event has previously sold out, we highly recommend purchasing a ticket beforehand to ensure you receive your place.
Q. Why has the price gone up?
A.. Eugh, we know!! But putting on a show of this size without funding is super expensive - however we believe in a process of full transparency, so you know as an audience exactly what you’re paying for. Please follow this link to see our entire budget if you are interested or concerned, so you can see how every cent you contribute goes towards the fair payment of every artist and worker involved in this show.
***Please note: by purchasing a ticket, you'll be automatically added to the 1781 Collective Mailing List - simply unsubscribe or let us know if you would like to be taken off of this list. You'll be contacted very rarely specifically for Labyrinth-related and similar events, and we have no desire, means, or methods to share your contact details with anyone. Ever.

ABOUT THE VENUE:
A stone’s throw from Alexanderplatz and Volkspark Friedrichshain, Musikbrauerei is situated on the historical site of the 120-year old Schneider Brewery. Having witnessed lavish balls and festivals during Berlin’s roaring 1920s and 1930s, the cellar acted as a shelter during the bombing campaigns of World War II; before being repurposed as a listening station by the Stasi in the DDR. Purchased after reunification in the 1990s and independently owned since, the venue has been a centre of music production and live events, catering and supporting local Berlin artists and organisations consistently for almost 25 years.

“Amazing experience <3 great talents! Glückwünsche an das ganze Ensemble”
“Loved it soo much and would love to be part of the mailing list - is that possible? Don't want to miss any other show”
“Fascinating atmosphere, great ambiance, skilled performers, excellent concept, I had a very good time! I really have no criticism here, it was wonderful.”
“Was amazing!”
“this was our second Labyrinth - all the performers are amazing, but there were several overlaps/exact same 'concepts' as in the previous time at Musikbrauerei. Also, the theme 'inferno' didn't pop at all. Still had a great experience - this is just our immediate feedback.”
“it was great!”
“Thank you for this unique experience”
“Nothing. Looking forward to the next one”
“The performers I selected as favorite in Q5 were also great in the overall flow of the sequence, for adding something different/variations from the pervious performances in a brilliant way. This let me experience/encounter the performance in awe, as part of the flow of the event. I do think every individual performers were great for its own circle at the event, but the sequence and the choice of medium across the performers matter for me to keep engaging and appreciating the performances. I particularly liked the flow from "The Forest" to "Circle #2" and how "Circle #8" took place brilliantly (in stairs, inviting us with the electronic base and leading us into the next performance with the flute, like a Pied Piper of Hamel).”

“Thank you, I very much enjoyed the evening! Hope to join again soon :)”
“Euphoria was absolutely beautiful and breathtaking!”
“We marked our favorite performances above, but truly appreciated them all (and some were truly stunning!)! We loved how the whole sequence was orchestrated and told an immersive story. Will definitely be interested in future events!”
“‘Really enjoy what you're doing, the creativity is wonderful and it's totally unique. My absolute favourite performance by a mile at both events was by Maroulita de Kol and Penelope Gkika - they are truly incredible! would love to see a longer performance from them if possible.”
