Laura Mars (Dunaway), a talented art/fashion photographer at the top of her game in New York, recreates grizzly crime scenes ripped from the headlines of newspapers. Eroticizing and glorifying violence for the pages of the hottest fashion mags, Mars comments on how fashion, art, and violence are intertwined. When police officer Jon Neville (Jones) sees uncanny commonalities between Mars’s photos and unpublished facts of several murders, the photographer comes under suspicion. Too specific to be coincidental, Mars envisions the horrible murders of the models and crew she works with as she looks through her camera lens—only to have the vision come true.
Featuring the photographs of the famed Helmut Newton, director Irvin Kershner—of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK fame—links the act of photographing and its objectification with death and violence.
