Description
WELCOME TO THE 2018 CONCERT SEASON AT CBC'S GLENN GOULD STUDIO!
On the first Thursday of every month - January through April - we present the WRITE OFF THE KEYBOARD Series.
MAINSTAGE GALA on Thursday, April 5th at 7:30 pm: Franz Liszt led a dazzling life of celebrity and renown. His influence as performer, creator and colleague both to his own generation and those beyond remains palpable today. Liszt's personal journey was a colourful - and oft times demanding - one.He sought solitude and spiritual refuge at various stages throughout his career and with varying degrees of intensity.
As a young man in the 1830's, Liszt embarked on a consequential pilgrimage through continental Europe. He journeyed to Switzerland, Italy and Austria. A decade or so later, the composer re-wrote much of the earlier music he had sketched on this grand tour. The first revision came to be published as the Années de pèlerinage: Première Année, chronicling his time in Switzerland and evoking the sights and sounds encountered there.
This recital evolves the theme of pilgrimage and the journey. Adam Sherkin performs his own German Promises, Sunbent, Sonata No. 3 (“Ended in Ice”) and the world premiere of a new song cycle, More than Earthly Meat and Drink* (poetry by David James Brock), with guest soprano: Adanya Dunn. Dunn and Sherkin also present three songs by Franz Liszt.
*These are musical settings of three poems from Ten-Headed Alien, a brand new collection released this Spring by David James Brock. (Wolsak and Wynn Ltd). Brock is a Canadian playwright, poet and librettist based in Toronto. He has been featured as guest artist, director and collaborator during this season's WRITE OFF THE KEYBOARD SERIES.
