Remember video nasties, rubber monsters and glorious below-par B-movies from the 1980s? Punk horror rockers Lugosi are here to remind us all just how fantastically cheesy and tongue-in-cheek this forgotten era was. The bands’ 2 self-released albums – “Rise from the Grave” and “Video Nasty” are jam-packed with rock n’ horror madness channelling the spirit of Clutch having a beer with The Cramps as the Misfits roll the next joint. This is B-movie soundtrack gold, marinated in pure rock n’ roll and seasoned liberally with dark humour. Lugosi are JM Burr on vocals and theremin, Jimmy Rooney on drums, guitarist Alan Morton and Martin Hanrahan on bass. Delivering heavy music informed by horror and science fiction, infused with a singular humour and delivered with groove and style, Lugosi are best described as a sonic Ed Wood movie transmitted through rock n roll - a cartoon catalogue of monsters, myths, aliens, witches, vampires, secret societies and a whole lot more. Stylistically the band have been influenced by Danzig, Misfits, Clutch and Black Sabbath, with a smattering of Django Rheinhardt thrown in for good measure. Bassist Martin Hanrahan joined in 2023 and with his writing input now firmly established within the band, the upcoming third album promises if not quite a new direction, certainly a few unexpected detours down dark alleyways along the way. Last saw a triumphant debut performance at the Siege of Limerick, as well as prestigious support slots to Night Demon and a memorable Belfast show with Nick Oliveri. Lugosi are currently busy writing and recording for the much anticipated third album, with new material to be unleashed upon an unsuspecting public with live shows in Autumn 2024. Expect the unexpected.
