Description
Monash Peninsula Activity and Recreation Centre (MPARC) is a ‘5 Star Green Star – Education V1’ rated facility, designed by Harmer Architecture. Completed in 2012 it was the first Monash building to achieve a Green Star rating from the Green Building Council of Australia and embraces the philosophy of healthy active living. The three-level building houses state-of-the-art sporting facilities, including a fitness centre, two multi-purpose sports courts, an exercise physiology lab, and a movement and performance studio. MPARC houses research, education and training facilities across a number of disciplines including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychology, and teacher education. The centre offers public services and memberships through its gymnasium, group fitness room, group cycle studio and a two-court multi-purpose stadium with viewing platforms. The stadium has been designed with a self-monitoring ventilation system, allowing windows to open and close automatically in response to interior temperatures, keeping the courts at a comfortable temperature at all times. The building façade is based on an abstraction of surrounding roofs and ranges in colour from blue-grey to charcoal and terracotta. Each double-height brick was individually numbered and coded prior to construction to ensure a ‘camouflaged’ effect. MPARC was jointly funded by Monash and the Commonwealth Government.
