About Toria
Toria Garbutt's unique blend of pure punk heritage and unapologetic spoken word confession make her one of the most vital and visceral poetic voices in the country.
Hailing from West Yorkshire, Toria Garbutt started writing poetry aged 13 when she stole two Jim Morrison poetry books from Knottingley Library – she loved them so much she never returned them. Then Sylvia Plath arrived at aged 16 opening her eyes to confessional female poetry. She then wrote privately for years, and although she dreamt of sharing her writing with others, raising children (including her sisters’ for a while) and a long term abusive relationship meant that didn’t happen.
Quite a long time later she sent a parcel of poems, glitter and wham bars to Mancunian poet, Mike Garry and invited him to a show. He became a mentor and champion of her work , introducing her to John Cooper Clarke and his management.
She is now special guest to John Cooper Clarke on his live show which tours the country and she has performed at some of the most prestigious theatres in the UK.
Toria’s first published poetry collection The Universe and Me charts Toria’s life in the broken ex-mining town of Knottler through poems about love, motherhood, addiction, heartbreak, loss and abuse. These are Toria’s experiences laid bare and told in her bold, distinctive voice. But there is lightness, beauty, humour and a glorious nostalgia in equal measure in her words. Life’s simple pleasures, quirks and lessons are cherished and celebrated in The Universe and Me, just as openly & honestly as its most painful experiences are examined.
She has appeared at numerous festivals (Latitude, Festival Number 6 ) and released an album of her work set to music in 2016 (Hot Plastic Moon - Nymph and Thugs.)
