Description
Update: We're planning on going ahead with the event despite the weather forecast! See you there rain or shine!
The pre-pride picnic is being brought to life by a group of us who met via social media with the shared common desire to create new queer connections. After realizing the gap in the Toronto community, we have taken it into our own hands to create a safe, inclusive, family-friendly meetup. Our hope is that the pre-pride picnic will allow members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community a space to hangout with your current pals and make new ones!
LOCATION: Christie Pits Park (750 Bloor Street West)
We will be stationed near the gazebo next to the playground. Hot tip: look for the pride flags !!
Christie Pits Park and all of Toronto stand on the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. We ask and encourage all attendees to be respectful of the land we picnic on and the space we take up.
DATE: Saturday, June 11th, 2022 (alternative rain check date TBD - we will announce any changes 24 hours in advance)
TIME: 2:00p.m. - 7:00p.m.

If arriving via public transportation, the closest location is Christie Station (5 Christie Street, Toronto).

WHAT TO EXPECT:
The volunteer set-up team will be arriving early in the day to claim the public gazebo. Please note that this is a public park and there is no guarantee of exclusive access. There are also a few trees in the area that provide shade. There will be a few picnic blankets set up for you to freely use. This will be first come, first serve.
We invite attendees to take part in a few fun activities including; lawn games, @queeriositycardgame, playing cards, “mom hugs” and music. There is also a skatepark, basketball courts, soccer field and baseball diamonds that you are encouraged to use at your own risk.
This is a family friendly event, so we ask that you are respectful with the language you use and the events you take part in.
WHAT TO BRING:
Everyone is responsible for bringing their own requirements for the picnic. This includes, but is not limited to; water, food, blankets, sunscreen etc. We encourage people to keep the picnic as eco-conscious as possible.
PRE-PRIDE PICNIC VALUES
Community:
The goal of the pre-pride picnic is to help foster and build community. We know it can be nerve racking to show up alone, but we can ensure that there are steps in place to make sure you feel like part of the event! There will be volunteers walking around that would be happy to introduce you to some people within the community and get the conversations started. Volunteers will be easily visible wearing a patch. We will also be doing some social media introductions prior to the event, so you can recognize all our beautiful faces!
Diversity & Inclusion:
The pre-pride picnic has been created for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. If you are an ally please be aware of how you are taking up space. No racism, transphobia, homophobia, queerphobia, fat shaming, slutshaming and any oppressive behaviour will be tolerated. If there are any issues please speak to one of the volunteers.
Equity:
If there are any questions, concerns or anything you think we have missed, we encourage you to send us a DM to start the conversation.
Pride:
Overall, we want this meetup to be a fun filled afternoon where you are encouraged to make new connections. Please be respectful and kind to one another.
ACCESSIBILITY:
The park is wheelchair accessible by a paved ramp leading down to our designated meetup spot. Our main setup will be close to the public washroom which is also accessible. There will be a few picnic tables available for sitting. These spots will be first come, first serve. Please note there is also a steep hill. If you have any mobility concerns, please reach out to our team and we will do our best to accommodate.
