In 1982 Bruce Springsteen had just come off the road from a two-year world tour in support of his double album The River. He had played 140 of trademark marathon shows. He was on the verge of superstardom - and everyone around him knew it. For most of that year he hid out in a rented house and recorded demos directly to cassette tape on a 4-track Portastudio - new technology at the time. Then he looked the star making machine straight in the eye and decided not to play that game.
He released ten of those demos as Nebraska. The album was raw, stark and unembellished. The songs had no heroes and no villains, everyone in them was making their way with what they were given, every grim or brutal scene has its own context and its own internal logic. Nebraska starts with a song about a spree-killing couple on a joy ride - and ends with a dead dog.

Nebraska wasn’t received well - by critics, by radio or by fans. There was no energy, youth, optimism, joy - nothing of what the world wanted Bruce Springsteen to be. It was solemn and thoughtful - introspective. It has become though, over time, a focal point for many fans. Described by music critic William Ruhlmann as "one of the most challenging albums ever released by a major star on a major record label."
On Sunday, September 22 - on the eve of Bruce Springsteen’s 70th birthday - Pineapple Productions is assembling 10 artists to perform all 10 songs from the Nebraska album in sequence. In addition, we’ll be filling out the afternoon with more songs from the Springsteen catalogue - and some surprise guests and unexpected twists.“Down in the part of town where when you hit a red light you don't stop”
Among the performers creating this unique show are:
Performing Nebraska – Greg Hinde is multi-instrumentalist from Prince Edward County whose influences include Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young and among a wide array of classic rock artists. He hosts a progressive rock radio show on 99.3 County FM.
Performing Atlantic City – Gav Session is a singer/songwriter, guitarist, keyboardist, enthusiast, podcaster and music educator. He has been playing and singing his unique blend of folk and rock & roll since an early age and is currently developing a program to help young people compose and record their own music for distribution throughout Canada and the world!
Performing Mansion On The Hill – Tony Forbes is a musician from Bloomfield whose musical combination of ethereal sounds, guitar work and powerful vocals has taken him across the continent.
Performing Johnny 99 – Tony Vani is a Belleville musical institution. He has released a CD as a solo artist, Her Blues. As a duo with slide guitarist Kenny Pauzé he has release the CD, Down A Dirt Road. He leads the Gospel blues band Tony Vani and The Holy Blues Band and performs with the rock band The Stir.
Performing Highway Patrolman – Jeremy Kelly is a multiinstrumentalist with a very strong musical background in jazz improvisation and harmony combined with a blues, country and celtic musical heritage. As a guitarist Jeremy has toured, composed and recorded with too many renowned artists and producers to list here.
Performing State Trooper – Roger Dorey is a singer/songwriter with over 1,000 original songs to his credit. He has created 2 bands – TEKNOFOBIK 4, and Kingston NEW Mississippi – and an alter-ego – COUSIN Gibbard Suede – who has released 2 CDs, Love & Addiction and 10 Greatest Sad Songs in His Life (the Troubadour Sessions).
Performing Used Cars – Knowlton Hunter is a self-confessed old-fogey guitar player and songwriter performing an infectious and eclectic mix of original tunes and restyled folk, country, blues and jazzy favourites.
Performing Open All Night – Mark Russell focuses his unique interpretation of familiar songs on a playlist of Americana and Folk music from the 1960’s to the present with a specific interest in the great North American songwriters – like Bruce Springsteen. He’ll be bringing his lonely Telecaster sound to Nebraska – that crisp twang that comes from a Tele with no other accompaniment and sends chills down your spine.
Performing My Father’s House – Steven ‘Doc’ Chalk is a singer-songwriter with extensive stage, TV and concert experience. Former TV host of ChalkTalk, Steven is also Counselor/Therapist who performs many healing and meditation celebrations to appreciative audiences internationally.
Performing Reason To Believe – ‘Banjo’ Bill McKim quickly learned – as a student – that at parties, musicians never had to bring beer. Now he sings and plays guitar, banjo, concertina and harmonica.SPECIAL GUEST – Alexandra Bell is one half of the eclectic guitar and banjo duo Rubbin' Elbows. She also is a host and co-produces a live monthly variety show in Belleville - Night Kitchen Too, now in its 7th season.Check back here often for more updates on who’s playing what songs.
