Description
Join Sweetwater Studios’ Shawn Dealey for a one-day intensive recording workshop with Dagon Tales - Robben Ford, Darrell Jones, Larry Goldings and Gary Husband as we take a song from start to finish in Studio A. Shawn will take you through the process of everything from setting up the studio for recording to tracking and overdubbing all the way through editing and mixing. You’ll learn to comp, edit, mix, apply EQ and effects, and make final decisions to perfect your mix. Your experience in this workshop will help you draw out the best in the musicians’ projects you record in your own studio.
This workshop is based around the creative recording process. We use Avid Pro Tools, but all the techniques can be used in a variety of different workflows. We recommend you have a basic knowledge of recording and some experience working in a DAW to attend this class.
Meet the Band...DRAGON TALES
ROBBEN FORD
Watching Robben Ford take the stage is equal parts gratifying, awe-inspiring, and challenging—a perfect storm of creativity and emotion that results in some seriously good music. As soon as he plays his first note, you realize that you’re in the presence of a bonafide guitar master. With five Grammy nominations, a three-decade-long solo career, and a resume that includes Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, and George Harrison, his accomplishments reflect the versatility and musicality of someone who has pursued their true calling. During a live performance, Robben is acutely tuned in, feeding off of the energy of the audience, and fully prepared to throw you a curve ball at any moment. In other words, it’s an experience not to be missed.
DARRYL JONES
Darryl Jones is an American bassist (upright and electric), session musician, and educator. Long before he replaced Bill Wyman as bassist in the Rolling Stones in 1993, he established himself in the bands of Miles Davis, Sting, John Scofield, and Wayne Shorter, and played on more than a hundred recordings -- he's since played on hundreds more. He joined the Stones as a touring player and has appeared on each album since 1994's Voodoo Lounge. The band's infrequent recording and touring activity left room for the bassist to become a nearly ubiquitous presence in genres ranging from pop and country to jazz and funk with a range of artists including B.B. King, Peter Gabriel, Eric Clapton, and Tania Maria. A longtime associate of saxophonist Bill Evans -- with whom he played in Davis' '80s groups -- he joined Evans' quartet alongside guitarist Robben Ford and drummer Keith Carlock for 2022's Common Ground.
LARRY GOLDINGS
A highly regarded pianist, Larry Goldings is an in-demand sideman and bandleader known for his balance of hard-swinging, harmonically nuanced post-bop and funky organ jazz. Emerging in the early '90s, Goldings established himself as a premier soloist on the New York scene, often playing in his trio with guitarist Peter Bernstein and drummer Bill Stewart. He has issued a stream of highly regarded albums, including 1995's Whatever It Takes, 2002's Sweet Science, and 2007's Grammy-nominated Saudades with drummer Jack DeJohnette and guitarist John Scofield. He is a longtime touring member of James Taylor's band, and has been sought out by a wide array of performers, including Norah Jones, Madeleine Peyroux, Maceo Parker, Sia, Charlie Haden, and others.
GARY HUSBAND
Gary Husband is one of a rare breed of musicians in that his expression is divided equally in his capacity as a drummer and a pianist and keyboardist of international repute. For close to four decades Gary has worked alongside a vast and eclectic range of celebrated musicians including John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Beck, Jack Bruce (Cream), Gary Moore (Thin Lizzy), British pop/funk band Level 42, Billy Cobham, Al Jarreau, Mike Stern (Miles Davis), John Wetton (King Crimson), Chris Squire (Yes), Andy Summers (The Police), Steve Hackett (Genesis), Robin Trower (Procol Harum), and with producers Sir George Martin (Beatles), Trevor Horn (Grace Jones & Art of Noise), Quincy Jones (Michael Jackson), Jerry Hey and James Guthrie (Pink Floyd).
