Featuring a Post-Screening Interview and Acoustic Performance from Fantastic Negrito
As part of the celebration of Black Music Month, the GRAMMY Museum is thrilled to welcome three-time GRAMMY-winning singer, songwriter, and musician Fantastic Negrito (neé Xavier Dphrepaulezz) for the premiere of his new film White Jesus Black Problems, followed by an intimate conversation moderated by radio host Nic Harcourt, and a very special acoustic performance.
Fantastic Negrito is releasing his most ambitious project to date, White Jesus Black Problems, on June 3 via his own label, Storefront Records. To accompany the full-length studio album, Fantastic Negrito created an entire companion film set to the music. White Jesus Black Problems was written, recorded, and filmed in Oakland, where the artist grew up and currently resides. The multi-media project is based on the true story of Negrito’s seventh generation white Scottish grandmother (Grandma Gallimore), an indentured servant, living in a common law marriage with his seventh generation African American enslaved grandfather (Grandfather Courage); in open defiance of the racist, separatist, laws of 1750s colonial Virginia.
The resulting work is part love story, part historical excavation, an extraordinary and exhilarating ode to the power of family and the enduring resilience of our shared humanity. The collection is bold and thought provoking, grappling with racism, capitalism, and the very meaning of freedom itself, all without ever losing sight of the desire and determination at the heart of the tale. Stepping back to absorb the work in its full audio and visual context yields a transcendent and immersive sensory experience, one that challenges our notions of who we are, where we come from, and, perhaps most importantly, where we’re headed.
