LOUISVILE, KY – The River City Drum Corp (RCDC) is preparing to celebrate Louisville’s Derby festivities by hosting its annual “Da’ Ville Classic” on Saturday April 29th, 2023 at Louisville’s Palace Theatre. An annual tradition for the Louisville organization, RCDC began hosting this event twelve (16) years ago. This year, the event will include a feature performance by the students of the River City Drum Corp, along with guest exhibition performances from the award-winning drumline of Boom Squad from Evansville, IN, student drum groups from Maupin Elementary School, and a performance from The Malone Step and Dance Team.
.
The River City Drum Corp was founded by Mr. Ed White, and was created to provide a structured environment and support system to stimulate youth in Louisville as community leaders, and to create a community where live music is enhanced and strengthened through the “Spirit of the Drum”. The RCDC consists of youth from Louisville, ranging from grades K-12, who participate in a year-round drumline. The group trains and practices twice a week and one Saturday a month, learning the skill and technique for various percussion instruments, including a marching style drumline. The organization is run by a music director, but students run the ensemble themselves. Students are required to maintain a 2.5 GPA to remain active and must also maintain 80% school attendance. The RCDC also strongly encourages parents to be involved by attending regular organization meetings to support the business and administrative needs.
The Da’ Ville Classic is one of the RCDC’s most popular programs. Similar to the Battle of the Bands showcases unique to Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU’s). The Classic was created to bring children and families together with the greater Louisville community to enjoy a unique part of the black college experience. For RCDC participants, the Classic represents a chance to show them what can happen when students take their music skills to the next level.
“We’re bringing the community together to see what “The Spirit Of The Drum” can do for the children and families we serve” says Shumake, Executive Director and alum of the RCDC as well.
The RCDC is funded through private donations, state and federal grant dollars, along with annual dues and fees from students. Proceeds for this year’s Classic will go towards the ongoing support and operations of the organization.
