Rod Laver Arena is celebrating its 30th anniversary and embarking on a new era as it undergoes a phenomenal redevelopment – after hosting thousands of world-class sporting and entertainment events to become one of the busiest and highest-grossing venues around the globe. Since opening in 1988 as a purpose-built centrepiece for the Australian Open and multi-purpose entertainment centre, Rod Laver Arena has gone on to play host to a wide range of sports, shows and concerts, from tennis matches to international superstars – such as P!NK and Beyoncé – rock stars, and motorbike super-cross. The most dynamic transformation Rod Laver Arena has seen was in March 2007 with the FINA 2007 World Swimming Championships when a 50-metre temporary pool was built on the arena’s floor. Peddle Thorp Learmonth and Cox Architecture firms lead innovative design with a world-first retractable roof, setting a benchmark that allows the venue to be transformed from indoor to open-air in just minutes. Beginning in February 2016, and staged over four years, the current redevelopment will reinvigorate the arena with a focus on customer experience and ensuring it continues to harness the biggest and best shows for Victorians for generations to come.
