Description
Be a part of the best sport EVER!
Our six-week 'Progression' course is aimed at those who have skated before (or attended our six-week Foundations block) and can skate, change direction and comfortably stop.
Progression course
Six weeks from Tuesday 24 October to Sunday 3 December 2023. Sessions will take place on Tuesdays (7pm-9pm) at Leith Academy, except for the sixth session which will be at Leith Community Centre on Sunday 3rd December.
You will learn basic roller derby moves and skills, including an introduction to the full-contact elements of the sport, in a safe and controlled environment.
Progression is suitable for people who have skated before (or have completed Block 1 of the programme), and can skate, change direction and comfortably stop.
Gender Statement
In line with the Women's Flat Track Roller Derby Association Gender Policy, all those who identify as women, trans women, intersex women and/or gender-expansive may train and compete as skaters of Auld Reekie Roller Derby if women's flat track roller derby is the version and composition of roller derby with which they most closely identify.
All genders may train as skating and non-skating officials, and join as non-skating members in other capacities.
Venue
All sessions will be held at Leith Academy, unless Leith Academy is closed for holidays, exams or refurbishment.
Cancellations and Refunds
Cancellations and refunds can only be accepted up to 1 week prior to the event start date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need my own skates and safety equipment?
If you have your own kit (skates plus protective gear), that's perfect. If not, let us know when you sign up and we will see if we can find the right sizes to loan you kit. We can't guarantee enough kit for everyone, but we will try our best.
The only safety equipment you'll need to supply yourself is a mouthguard – these are necessary and must be fitted to your teeth before the first session.
What should I wear?
Wear something comfortable that you can move in. Most of our skaters practice in a t-shirt or vest top and leggings or shorts. Remember, you will wear knee pads and elbow pads on top, so avoid thick or bulky clothing.
What else should I bring?
Water, spare socks, and a mouthguard pre-moulded to fit your teeth. Sisu brand mouthguards are favoured by most derby skaters but not the cheapest, so any mouthguard will do to start.
